I was wondering what I could do to my 05 ex that is bone stock. I would like to keep it under $500. I do alot of trailriding and a good bit of jumping...but nothing too big.

I would do the intake and exhaust first. Then go into the engine.;)

The air filter and exhaust are certainly the easiest thing to upgrade and probably 99% of those who mod thier quad do that first. There's nothing wrong with that either.

I going to go out on a limb here and say there's more bang for the buck with a cam and piston if you're able to do the work yourself. Of course doing the cam piston along with the filter and exhaust will provide even better gains.

This is just my opinion from all the reading i've done and I was just offering another option to think about;)

I'll find out for sure in a few weeks. I just got done taking apart the top end about an hour ago:D

yeah you could do the High comp piston and a cam but with stock exhaust youd be dissappointed forawhile until you could get it to breath,,,

these are all New prices,, you can get used cheaper of course

K&N-50
HMF- 190
Hotcam stage 1 or 2- 120
high comp piston 90-110
Bore work- 50 if you go over stock bore if not skip this
Jets- 15

youd have to do all of your own assembly tho thats

50
190
120
110
50
15
+_____
535 if you bore it out
- 50
----------
485 if you leave it stock bore

WE came close anyway,,, you may beable to save some cash by getting some of these parts used or even new on ebay,,,

Hotcam price was from ebay
Piston price is around C&Ds
K&N is K&N MSRP
HMF is Ebay
Bore work is typical bore price,,, if you bore it any
Jets are just a Guess,.,,,, it would be around there tho

Get shocks.

Then open up your airbox for free and more power.

i would get a HMF pipe with a UNI or K&N air filter. Then I would go with handle bars or nerfs from there. And it gepends on how lond youve rode your tires on the rode but tires or tires and rims next.

a cam/pistoned ex with a stock pipe will out run any piped and jetted ex. joe is right. if your huge into racing, shocks may be important. if not, look elsewhere. you won't be able to find near the best shocks for the price you want to pay.

Ok guys thanks for your help. How hard is it to change a piston and put a cam in. What does it consist of doing? Also, what ias the difference for higher comp pistons......i get confused when people are talking about them. Whats a good one to get?

Thanks cals;)

Rico is more right though, shock will make a bigger difference, maybe not in drag racing but for trails and jumping, yes:) I haven't priced them in awhile but I think Works with rezzies are around $500 and Econo Elkas are a little bit more.

I just took the top end off last night. It isn't that hard if you have good tools, take your time and use a repair manual. The manual is the most important tool;)

Read some of the past posts about pistons and compression. Don't pay too much attention to what brand yet, everyone has their opinions.

suspension does make a heck of a difference,,, its really up to the rider,,, Power or finess (Sp?) first

im not really worried about suspension. What i meant by what type of piston was what comp ratio or whatever. thanks

I know;)

Some Mfgs. have a certain compression for certain bore diameters, generally the bigger the bore the higher the compression. I'm sure this doesn't apply to every mfg. Like I said before, don't pay too much attention to the brand of piston yet, there are subtle differences between some brands and everyone has their preference.

The higher the comp. the more HP & the more chance of something else going wrong, from a blown gasket to a broken rod. If you stay around 10.8:1 - 11:1 you should be fairly safe and be able to run pump (92 octane) fuel. Get into the higher comps and you'll want to pay very close attention to maintenance, but that should be done anyway.;)

Also.. there are many details that are involved, many of which can be found in past posts if you want to sift through them;)

do you want ride quality, power or cosmetics ??? I would say works shocks and a set of six ply tires for trail riding and jumping. If you want a little more power go with the airfilter and pipe mod. I would say there are more aftermarket parts and assecories for the 400ex than anything ( well maybe 250R has more). But you need to find some used parts to keep it under $500

Leave it stock. Is the only way to spend less than $500, because once you start it's really hard to stop. look at sig

I definitely only want an exhaust, jet, and filter. then some skids or nerfs. Im 16 and I know i gotta save money for a car. I also got 2 jobs.

05-09-2005, 09:39 PM
i'm in the same boat as you, I am neering 16 fast and what to upgrade my quad. I am going with a pipe kit, air box lid, jet/needle kit. you kinda gotta know what you are dooing to get that jet kit to work correctly.
