im coming from a built 300ex, and im wondering if i should buy a modified 440ex to race next season until i have the funds to get a 450, the 440 will get me to the next step and then the 450 should be icing on the cake, correct? or should i just quit being a cheap *** and get a 450 from the start?

get one from the start

i made the mistake of buying a 400ex and thinking i would save money by building it to beat a 450... but i was wrong. now i am being beaten by 20-40seconds a lap

i'm gonna be buying a z400 to see if i can take that road

there is alot you can do with a 400. you can definately build one to eat a 450. its gonna take some money though.

I rode a 440ex the other day and it is definately quick. It has a ton of low end power and I was very impressed but with just the few mods my 450 has I easily beat it. It depends on how much you can get a 400ex for. I paid $6200 for my 450r! They are both excellent machines but the 400ex is better in tight trails.

the 440 will definately get you started a little cheaper ( just make sure its a reliable one ), as far as performance there are plenty of 440ex out there that will eat 450's ( even 450's that have mods ). The biggest difference in the two is definately the price. They perform very equally. Do you want kickstart or electric start ? As for the guy getting beat by 20-40 seconds a lap, its probably not the difference in quads !!!

well, i know i can find a good race ready 400ex cheap (about 3-3500) but that would be 3-3500 bucks that wouldnt go to a new 450, but i could get the 440, race it some, then get a 450 and use my 440 for a practice quad and 450 for a race machine, it would just take a little while for the 450 to get modded to the extent of the 440.. or should i just get a 450 and say F a practice quad

Save up the money to buy a 450. Doesn't make any sense to buy a quad because you can't afford a better one when you plan on getting it sooner or later anyway. I'd save up the money that you're going to spend on the 400ex for the 450R, maybe even put all that money into a CD account for a year and get some interest off of it.

If I were you I'd just save for a 450. You are going to spend quite a bit of money getting a 400ex race ready. I would just save that money and spend it on a 450. Trust me I wanted to do that this winter but my dad didn't want to spend the money on a 450, so we bored my 400ex to a 440. It was a very reliable setup and great components put in but I have had some bad luck with the spring on the clutch lever rod breaking. It then ruined my oil pump, broke a tooth on my counter balancer, I had to get a new first gear and now we think it bent the gears on my crank too so I have to get a whole new crank. I'm not saying this happens very often or that it will to you but a little bad luck can really be expensive and mostly make you extremely mad. I'd save for the 450 if I was you!

just try to get a loan from the bank and get a 450. the 440 isnt worth the money

but think about it, i can get an already race ready 400ex now for like 3500-4000 and it be competitive with the 450s, or i can spend 6800 for a stock 450 and then it need suspension. we have the money, but i dont think i need the 450 yet, but my 300 just doesnt have enough ummfhh to get me thru the rest of the season racing these 450s, and i beleive a 400 will give me what i need to finish out this season and then i'll keep it for a practice/back up quad next year when i get the 450
