i got the piston out today and sa only 2 rings on it
and an empty space where the top ring goes.

A missing ring well make your engine blow up fast. one ring is not going to hold the piston in place. frist it well scratch the hell out of the shelve then it well grab and that is the end of your motor.

was it put it when it was installed? there are 5 rings on the 400ex pistons.. the top ring, the second ring, the oil ring, and the 2 rings that go in the same groove as the oil ring..

If you didnt have one in there to begin with, it dont see why it would blow, it would allow the motor to rev a tiny big quicker, BUT wouldnt allow the compression to hold like it should..

If it was in there, and now not, you got issues..

I am just going by what i have seen frist hand from working on other bikes (2 strokes and some 4)
