I need to know how long a service manual calls for to r&r clutch discs. Also a good brand of clutches to use. I burned mine up at pismo last weekend. I have the mods listed below

It can be done in an hour or so, but I don't know what the manual says. Tusk clutches are cheap, and a lot of ppl are using them. I hear a lot of ppl using ebc and barnett also, just which ever you prefer.

Do it the right way with an 8 plate kit from sparks or GT Thunder.

how much better are the eight plate systems, why not just order another plate and disc and make any clutch eight plate?

8 plates equal less clutch slippage longer clutch life better power to the ground

if you wanna just replace the fiber you have now, go with oem, there is none better

Why not just put eight stock plates in it instead of buying the sparks clutch?

There probably is not enough depth in the stock clutch basket.

You can just replace the existing fiber and metal plates for alot less.

the gt thunder kit comes with a machined boss that allows room for the extra plates

Just wondered, I wouldn't care to have one, but for the price difference I think I will get a tusk. I don't race as of now, I might get back into it later, but I will worry bout that then.

you'd be better off ordering some oem fibers from service honda but if you really want that tusk have at it:o

The 8 plate kit is not made up of 400ex plates. It uses 250r and 300ex plates.

When I upgraded my clutch to whats in the picture above I couldn't believe how big of a POS the stock setup was.

It gave a whole new meaning to the term "Power to the Ground" as Ugly stated.

how much do the 8 plate systems run? Could you not use the 400 basket and just get the r or 300 plates to make it work?

the inner pressure plate has been machined to fit the extra plates, you can go ahead buy the fibers and plates but they won't fit

GT Thunders clutch kit includes 8 new clutch fibers, 7 new clutch
steels, a new set of heavy duty clutch springs, a new inner pressure plate that has been machined to provide clearance for the extra plates, and a new side cover gasket all for 212.95, heck of a deal :o

You can run a stock basket with the 8 plate kit but your taking a chance of having the stock basket explode from the extra pressure. Also the 8 plate setup comes with heavier springs.

8 plate kit with springs run about $130, hinson basket is just good insurance.

I apologize to the guy who started the thread for butting in. I wonder how much they took off the pressure plate b/c I could get mine machined pretty easy. I have a lot of buddies who are machinists. rico, where did the 130 kit come from you are talking bout?

it's 130 for 8 fibers, 7 plates and heavy spring, that price does not include the basket :o

Rico said they use 250r and 300ex plates, do they use one fibers and the others metal plates and if so which one is which?

If I remember correctly it's 250r fibers and 300ex plates

Ok, according to yamaha of troy, the 300 and 250r use the same metal plates. They have different fibers though and the 400 has different plates and fibers to either of the others. So, here's my dumb ?. If I just buy r fibers and 300 plates, will they just fit in my basket(I know a hinson would be good security, but money is tight). Also, if I just bought an extra 400 fiber and plate would they fit, or would it work if I got my pressure plate machined?

You don't HAVE to have the plate machined, mines not, but It will allow the clutch to work a little smoother.

You can just buy the plates yourself but you WILL need stiffer springs. I bought my complete set from Sparks Racing, but that's only the plates and springs. I think GT Thunder has a better package going.

I have barnett springs in mine now. I just put them in last spring. The clutch though is the original, still going from 99. It doesn't slip, but it is getting to where it is a little grabby and hard to find nuetral when the motor is running., So, any particular year that the r fibers need to come from, and what if I just use the 400 plates?
