Ok I ordered my HMF slipon and it came with a 152 main and a 42 pilot which is what hmf suggested for the 05....they also said 2 1/2 turns out on the fuel screw. All that was fine...however they said to put the clip on the needle 2nd from the bottom, well my 05 400ex only has 1 notch in the clip!!

Am I getting the full performance from this setup or do I need to buy another needle with more room for adjustments??And if so, any suggestions on which needle to go with and where to get it???

Thanks Alot

are you sure you only have 1 notch in the clip? i haven't seen an 05 carb or needle yet so i am not saying your wrong but there is no way in the world i can see them doing that. did you take the needle all the way out of the carb?

i had the carb all the way off the bike because of the funking *** fuel screw on the 05's...and yes I took the needle all the way out and theres only 1 notch...kinda strange i think...any suggestions on what to do??

LTZ & KFX have the one clip needle I would call HMF on this to see what they say.

taking a pic sounds nice...but im not gonna pull the carb to take a pic of the needle...anyway it only has the one notch and nothin else...thats all...so im wondering if im getting full performace with using the stock needle or if I need a new needle....the quad runs awesome with the 152 main,42 pilot and 2 1/2 turns on the fuel screw....no bogging or sputtering at any throttle position...and definatly gained a good bit of power...just dont know if ima get more power with a new needle!!

the needle won't really affect the power output. it mainly affects fuel flow from 1/8 to 3/4 throttle. so after that, the mainjet takes over. what are the numbers on the stock needle?

time to revive this thread.......

i'm jetting a buddy's 2005 e and he's right-only on needle groove. needle has "C61A" imprinted on it. since stock is 148mj and 38pj, i'm thinking of a 155mj and 42pj for a stock motor with just a uni filter and hmf slip-on.

anyways, will the older ex model needle fit in or should I leave the needle alone?

thanks

Yes, I also have a '05 EX and I put the '99-'04 needle in. It is compatible. The stock clip location is third down from the top.

As of now I have not completed my jetting, but this is where I currently stand:

WB E-series Slip on with 12 discs
Pro-Design with their filter (like a UNI)
EHS racing lid (an Outerwears no lid setup)
Kiehin #42 pilot at about 2-2.5 turns out
162 main jet
'99-'04 needle on the fourth from the top.

This is probably a little rich, so I'll be doing further testing this weekend

I think he's planning on leaving the airbox lid on. would the 42 pilot be too rich? thanks.

Even with the lid on, I'd still do the #42 pilot. It will help with cold starts!
