View Full Version : best quad set-up for flat track racing?

i am trying to build a flat track racer. what is the best motor, suspension(steering stem, a-arms, shocks, swing arm, axle) and any other necessities for flat track racing. thanks in advance.

TT IMO you need a lot of power, suspension dosent come into play as much as MX or TT. But you deffinatly want a sway bar. Most guys in my local circut run a very built motor, stock shocks, lowering kit, swaybar, and TT tires. I Highly sugest a 450 conversion if you have the money.

Build a CRF, anything and everything you can to the engine, extended a-arms, shortened swingarm, extended axle, sway bar, ZPS shocks. You'll be about right.

Or get a YFZ get some wheel spacers, sway bar lowering kit, and pipe and filter it. Should be pretty damn fast.

www.servicehonda.com should sell you a brand new crf450r or trx450r motor for about $3,500 or you can get a used one for about $2,000

What chassis are you using now? Going out and buying a 450r or yfz450 would be the best bet. Depending on your size, shorter swingarms can really help the handling of the bike. You'll want good tires and a sway bar first off. For a-arms, JDperformance makes really good a arms and swingarms for the price. (he used to weld at lonestar) The stock steering stem should be fine. As for axle, get a g-force or something cheap. Just dont be jumping huge jumps with it. Shocks actually help quite a bit. Get some works or something simple. After all, you arent going to be testing them by hitting huge jumps. For the motor, there are lots of choices there, you should jsut decide what to get. hope that helped some

get a 250R but a 310 Powervalve on it and some TT shocks and swaybar and tires and have NOTHING touch you on the track. A 250R is unrivaled on the TT track. Baldwin told me that Farr still prefers the 250R for TT!:p

Maybe because that was pretty much the only thing he rode for more than 10 years. I promise the 450's are turning faster lap times. Also, most classes are for up to 265cc 2 strokes.

i understand that but i figured he wanted all out power and he would race in the "outlaw" class where basically if it has 4 wheels you can race it. ;)


by the way a 250R just feels sweet on a TT track. Even though mine is setup for XC and im a novice TT rider I can see why a hooked-up 250R would be hard to beat!:macho

I don't understand threads like this.

The "best" is going to cost you easily $3500 in suspension alone. Now, it seems to me that anybody ready and serious enough to drop that kind of cash is very serious about flattrack racing, and probably already knows exactly what he wants.

Anybody that doesn't quite know what they want probably isn't ready to drop $3500 at once, and probably can't even ride it to full potential even if he does fork out the dough. So why are you asking about the "best"?

You want some basic mods to get you started? Get wide and low. If it's not an oval track, stability and speed through the corners is MUCH more critical than top speed through the straights.

After you get low and wide, look into motor mods.

After motor mods, look into a sway bar and a shorter swingarm.

you dont need a fast motor or a 310 kit. i have a 250 slightly ported with a 38 a/s carb and i can hang with a 330PV when we race. more power is only good on big big tracks or else your tires will just spin and get no traction. also shocks do ALOT thats why you dont see many pros running stock shocks. my 250r i got ported, bigger carb, lowerd in the rear, front BLASTER shocks, wheel spacer on the right rear with hoosier tires all the way around, and a sway bar. thats all i need and i can hang with the 450's and 330's and the 440ex's

a sway bar is a horizontal (sp) torsion bar that hooks the front a-arms together to make it act like a straight axel front end. each link that hooks to the lower shock mount is threaded, so by lengthening or shortening either side you can "jack" weight into either side of the machine. it also helps keep the machine flat in the corners and limits the body roll.

then go to veiw sellers other items too.And they all should be there!

what do i need to get to lower the rear? i am getting ready to buy a rear shock. is there a certain kind i need?

shocks cost alot of $$

the link is a threaded piece that goes in place of the link on the rear suspension.

It's very possible to shell out only a few hundred bucks, and have a decent setup. My first TT race was with extended a-arms and stock shocks. It was much too soft for jumping, but I wasn't expecting to hit any jumps on a TT course. Because they were so soft, they sat very low.

On the rear, I had an extended axle, and a rear lowering strut just like the one pictured above.

It wasn't a perfect setup, that's for sure. But without the added cost of shocks, it wasn't very expensive either, and gave me a HUGE advantage over stock. I took first place in the novice class that race.

yea about 500 maybe will get ya a decent set-up. get a front lowering kit if u dont wanna get shocks, a rear adjustable strut or rear lowering kit depending on what quad, sway bar, rear wheel spacers, and flat track tires (hoosiers) then you should be good to go for a lil bit of money

youre most exspesive things will deffinately be tires and wheels. new tires are like 90 bucks a piece...but hang out at your local races...some of the fast guys will be willing to sell you some used tires for cheap or even better, FREE!!

i had less that 8grand into my 450R last year (including the cost of the machine!) and ended up on the podium at the greenbriar gnctt in the 4stroke A class...goes to show, bling aint always king:devil: :macho
