Hey i ride trails and i have 22 inch holeshots on the rear and stock gearing, and i just have like no torque, i cant get the front end up in 2nd gear. Should i go down to a 14 front sprocket, or a 13? or should i go 14/39?
I want to be able to climb steep hills and lift the front end up easily.

i can lift the front end up in every gear on my 300ex, just jump up and down and then get on the gas when you come up and pull up on the bars like a mofo

A 14 tooth sprocket will be fine.

maybe your clutch is going bad man.

No his clutch his fine maybes its just because hes prob around 130-140 lbs and the stock 400ex with 15 tooth is geared high to begin with. go down to the 14 and it'll be lower then stock gearing even with the tires.

I did the calculations a while ago, When you have 22's and you drop down to a 14 in the front, it is almost the same gear ratio as stock gearing with 20's. But if you want more torque you have to compensate more, What I did when I had 22's is I went up to a 41-42 in the back, its the same as going down one more in the front, You can go to a 13 in the front, but when I did that I had to keep the chain tight so it wouldnt skip.

i went up a tooth on my craptor and i can still pull the front wheels in any gear sitting down with lil efort....but that doesnt matter...haha try a 14 and if that doesnt work try a 13 an keep it tight like was said above

yeah i would think about changing both sprockets so your chain wont skip...but when you get new tires go back to the stock rear sprocket and get 20s

yah, when i wear these out ima get some 20 in. razrs, ill be gettin some 20in razrs up front soon cuz i still have my stockers on up front, and their worn down pretty bad.

How big of a sprocket can u get in the rear before it will rub on the skid plate?
Im thinkin about goin maybe...14/39-40

u know I forgot about that, I had a 42 on the back and I had to lower the skid plate about 1/4"

you could grind some away too, or take the skidplate off but i wouldn't do that

don't get 20s on the front if you're riding trails...a 21 or 22 would be better

Ground clearance and say theres a big old nasty hole, you want to roll over the hole instead of going in it, Specially on trails you dont want a small tire, I run 21 fronts and 20 inch rears.

k i never really thought about that, but does an inch or 2 really make that big of a difference? And wouldnt it be weird looking? My quad already looks like a dirt drag bike with the stock fronts and 22 rears

Wont look bad at all, heres my boss's 330r with 22's front and rears I belive. It looks fine till you put say a 22 in the rear then a 20 up front. For what your doing if its normal trail riding, 21-20 would do or 22-20, You have to be careful because this all effects the handling of the bike, The best cornering is usually 20-18 or 19-18 but you cant go through a rutted trail with 18 inch rears :o

I believe it effects handling also

idk if its normal or not because i havent ridden any other 400ex's but when im puttin around in first gear, if im goin kinda fast, its not hard to get it up on its side when i turn.

Well obviously it would! It puts your COG (center of gravity) higher it would put more weight out farther cause its higher. So say for example if you move 1 inch at COG its only one inch. But every inch you go up from the COG it adds another inch of force out. Its hard to explain on here but its physics.

My formula isnt exactly right but its pretty darn close cause leverage ratios are hard for me to get!

Anyways taller tires is like putting a lift on your quad!I wish they made 21" rear tires. Best of both worlds ya know?

I do keep a set of 22" spider tracs for my R on the rear for tough trails and Razr 6 plys most of the time!:D

I've had 20 rear razrs and 20 razrs in the front for a good 2 years, its real real nice in the corners especially since I put a set of LSR +3s on but I wish I would have thrown on 21s on the front. Althought I gotta admit the stance of the wheeler looks pretty wicked.-darren
