I really dont have any other major complints about my EX tioehr than I wish it had MORE POWER! :blah: Mine has been rode alot and rode hard on many races and even my frame is still in great shape for the abuse it has taken over time ;)

400's need a bigger oil cooler, more compression, different trans gear ratios, alittle lighter in weight, and alittle more of an agresssive cam or just DOHC.... Oh yeah, reverse would be nice in the early years and it shoulda had a kick/electric start option!!!.. :muscle:

If you don't switch out the axle carrier, the bearings can be a weakness. The stock setup doesn't last too long if you ride it like you should.

The frame weak spots the others mentioned plus the footpeg area... I've seen several stock cracked swingarms too. This is caused by serious mx though.. I think the fact it's not liquid cooled and the fact that they added reverse for '05 makes it an excellent low-maintance, bullet proof sport quad.

I haven't found any weakness' in mine yet. As far as I know, there aren't any. As far as the reverse thing goes, who needs it? Hop off, pick it up, slide it over, do what you gotta do, hop back on and away you go. That's just my opinion.... Take it easy fellas.

Handlebars

I've bent my stock handlebars and I'm not even remotely hard on them.

Of course, it's nothing that a set of Renthals can't fix.

Thats not just a 400ex problem, thats prettymuch every stock quad produced right now. 400ex's are bulletproof.

Exactly what I was thinking QJ. The ex is one of the best handling quads today. Its just underpowered. In the air it feels light and predictable. Hell, my ex even handled good under water. :D Ok, now I'm kidding. The ex is a great machine and is rock solid. Just a little on the slow slide but a perfect recreational trail machine in my eyes. Now that it has reverse, its that much better!

main problem is air cooled and needs reservoir front shocks for anythang of fast trail riding...even tho i race gncc on my stock suspension ...it sux tryin to keep the speed that them guys with elkas can in whooped out sections on the track. also with a 440 kit they are right on with the power.

i would put my 440 up against any quad and beat em. there is not a dang thang wrong with the 400ex. as far as racing i can flat eat a half biult 450 no problem!! 10% quad 90% driver

like what r the most common things to break on it

jesshamner
04-26-2005, 07:44 PM
I can't think of anything that breaks on it. I rode mine hard for a year and didn't even have to replace the bearings that I mentioned above. I know several friends that had to replace them a couple times until they switched to a twin row bearing carrier. After seeing a 400ex tumble down a cliff at Hatfield/McCoy (about 200 feet), I'm convinced that the 400ex can't be beat in reliability. That 400ex that fell was wedged up against a tree. We adjusted the plastic b/c the rear was nearly folded in half and then hit the starter. It didn't hesitate at all. The damn thing started right up.

displacement, wimpy lift on the cam, no rezzys, steel subframe, exhaust is gay stock but thats every quad made, heads are built for mild power. The piston is heavy and the stroke is too long for wot but great for torque. Now the good things this quad isnt made too be an extreme quad but it does fill that role pretty damn good too Ok lets go on this quad is good at everything but not great at anything except for trails nuff said THATS WAT ITS MADE FOR. BUY A 450 for race or work hrd with your 400 to make jaws drop.

This *** couldn't beat his way out of a wet paper sack. I have watched him race twice. His big bad 440 is a pile of junk. I think his 90% driver crashed also.

Any bikes weakness is the rider. Other than that this question depends on what type of racing. In MX or desert racing, not much will beat a 400EX. The 450R has better shocks and slightly larger motor, but thats nothing aftermarket shocks won't fix and 50cc's isn't going to give you a race winning edge most of the time. Plus you can always upgrade the motor. All other bikes are total jokes compared to Honda's (except Cannondales) unless you want to drag race. Then *if* the riders are equal a Banshee or Raptor would win. But most Yamaha riders think getting a huge motor is what wins races and that suspension or learning to ride correctly isn't important. Thats why you never seem them on a MX track unless their in last place.

yea 50cc's wont give you a winning edge but 50lbs will:p

yamahas not seen on the track???? umm..... i guess you havent noticed all those damn yfz's on the tracks.. what about the zooks? they seem to do pretty good on the tracks too

1.air cooled,
2. lower a-arm shock mounts on eaarly years are known to cracking
3. Battery is mounted so it tends to tweak subframe

I have bent/broken many parts on my 400ex but thats because i race mx. I have bent the stock bars, broken the tool box and rear tail light off, bent steering stem, somehow lost the top of my carb, bent subframe, bent all 4 stock rims, blew a rear shock, but thats from riding like an idiot
