i am sick of 4 strokes and thinking of getting 2 stroke
what are the problems with the first years they came out?
what year was the best?
how much would a used one in good shape cost?
how reliable are they?
what would it need for maintenance?

no 'problems' persay as much as just differences. the 88 is the most disreable year based on performance. its the best handleing yr stock and the most powerful yr stock. once you start modding then they all pretty much become equal. 86 frame is the strongest stock but the 88-89 frames are the lightest. 86-87 hav 1 inch longer swingarm. 88-89 has shorter swinger and 1 inch forward a arms. as far as maintanance. change the case oil every so often, use non silicate cooling fluid. high oct gas with good oil. and rebuild the topend every 60hours give or take. usually just a new piston and rings unless u blow it up. no valves or anything like that to get in the road. and 60hours doesnt sound like a lot but time yurself actually riding sum weekend i bet you dont put more then 5 hours on it in 2 full days of riding. and a lot of guys can get upwards of 100+ hours out of a topend b4 it needs anything just depends on everything like any other high performance vehicle. also its not uncomon to get 10 hours out of a topend if you misstreat it or if any number of small problems happen... remember most high performance machines dont live passed 5 yrs let alone 20, plan on some upkeep.

you could probably pick up a 250R for around $3500 for one that has been beat and that has maybe some aftermarket parts like a pipe and carb. I would say $3500 is a good price to buy one at.
