I started out with a stock 1989 frame, and gusseted and painted it in my auto body vo-tech class.

The motor is mostly stock, nothing major done to it. It is bored over .010, has an mx port and polish by sparks racing, and a pro design cool head. I started polishing the side cases, and the cases are painted to match the frame.

The pipe is a sparks racing. The muffler got polished, and the expansion chamber is getting the paint removed, and I am trying to get as much of the chrome back as posible. The a arms a chrome +2 LSR, shocks are works tripple rates with rezzies. The springs are soon to be sent out to Pappy for powdercoating to match the rest of the quad. And the swingarm is a stock one that has been polished.

The spindles, part of the linkage, rear caliper mount, and motor mounts were painted this really sick gold/orange pearl color.

The next step was to start putting everything together, it was getting nice out, and I finaly got to move everything from my room to the garage.

The next thing I bought was a chrome sterring stem, and a stock rear shock that had a chrome spring, the body painted this awsome green color. Unfortunatly that green didn't go with my color scheme, so that and the handle bar mounts are now metalic black. I also got in the radiator, which will be polished soon.

So what do you guy's think so far?

Will that really affect anything? I'm shure there's something in the shop that can get that out.

Muddy400ex, its gonna be set up mainly for MX, but I'm still gonna ride mostly trails and mabey some hair scrambles with it. 3+2 offset front rims are what will go on it when I get the money for tires.

It would. I pull the dents out of my pipes (specially on the MX bikes) with a autobody post spot welder.

You know the ones where you slide in the post into the welder with the tip sticking out and it spot welds it into the metal and then you can slider hammer it out. It wont be perfect but it will make it small enough where it wont affect performance.

Also on your swinger-where is your slider? I dont see it. I also reccomend a locknut on the rear. The stock nuts suck big wads!

I think your cylinder is a 85 cylinder. I say that because it is black. does it have a spacer plate? I bet it does.

Also make sure you use loctite (lol i bet you knew that already, just checking) on the 250. It will shake all those new bolts loose quickly if you dont. Also try and reuse the stock nuts where possible. They have the steel locknut which is the best in my opinion.

all in all it looks great man. Check your calipers out before you bolt them on. You dont want your new quad nailing a tree because your stoppers didnt stop. Not that ever happened to me :eek2: I lost the o-ring seals on the slider pins and it was nuts!:scary:

Also for the pipe mount- I reccomend using ultra copper RTV OXYGEN SENSOR SAFE for the seal. Its be best and can withstand some very high temps and will not deform.

These are just a couple things I thought of off the top of my head. If you want some more tips you can PM me or hit me up on AOL.

I love 250R's!:macho

The slider that came with the swing arm is shot, I'll be getting one of those when I go down to the honda dealer here and order a bunch of small parts I will need. I will be ordering a RAD locknut through C&D this week prolly. The motor is an 87. Whats a spacer plate? Yea I knew about the locktight. When I go to tighten everything down before I go to ride all the bolts are comming out and getting some locktight. I have a stainless bolt kit that I got off ebay, most of the bolts won't be stock. Brakes, what brakes, I don't have the money for brakes:rolleyes: haha, those I still need. I'll keep in mind that seal stuff.

Thanks for the info. My AOL sn is in my sig if ya wanna talk

Well yesterday I painted the cylinder gloss black with the high temp paint, and also the radiator. There are only a few more things I need to do to finish all the parts on it that don't look new, a little polishing on the pipe, and right side case, and the kick starter. I should be buying plastics tomorow, and getting a gas tank and a seat latch thursday.

I'm looking at a set of black fullbores with a grey quadtech hood, I'm just waiting for the seller to get back to me one last time before I send the money. I will end up getting rid of the hood for a black nose piece with a headlight, then I'm going to have a set of grafics made to look like the stock ones, but the the color of the frame.

I also got a little more of the wiering figured out. Unfortunatley I don't have the tools to replace the pivot bolt berrings, so the rearend is all apart, and the swingarm might be going into the shop monday.:(

Nope, I'm taking the swingarm to someone I know that should be able to get the old berrings out and the new ones in, the plastic still has to be shipped out, that should be here early or mid week next week, I have the other part of the pipe off getting stripped and polished, thats about where I'm at right now. Well I got the plastic and seat in today I got them cheep so I know they are pritty rough. The seat cover I had no intention of useing anyway. I'm not shure yet if I am going to keep the grey carbon fiber nose, or get a black maier one with the light in it, the grafics kit is comming off. The front plastic will get sanded and plastic renewed, the rear plastic is worse than I thought it would be but o well. I'll rig it together to look decent and just get new ones in time. Look at the thread from the begining. I started with nothing. I bought everything separate. Most of the parts that I got I did do something to make them look better. I think the only parts that I didn't do something to are the a arms, and the sterring stem, not much you can do to chrome. The frame I guseted and painted, the motor had some work done to it, I painted the cases, polished the side cases and used high temp black on the cylinder. The swingarm is polished, I re-painted the radiator, polished the pipe, painted the rear hubs, painted the rear shock body, stering stem clamp, bar clamps, motor mounts, rear caliper mount, spindles, and some other stuff. The kickstarter and front springs were powdercoated. Look in the thread its all there.

Still to come are hopefully polished ITP c-series wheels. The front plastic is getting plastic renewed, the rears will be replaced along with the seat cover. I am going to have a custom seat cover made. I also need a set of pro pegs, and a 6 pack rear rack. For a grafics kit there is a guy localy that does car grafics, I'm gonna have a set of stock stlye grafics made up but in the same color as the frame. Other than that there isn't much more left on this quad. The wheels and tires, and brakes are the only 2 big things that I need for this project.

what did you use to get the plastic like that thanks nate

TheFontMaster
07-15-2005, 10:15 PM
I used plastic renew. It didn't turn out as good as the 300ex plastics did, I should have spent more time in some areas with the 320 and 400 grit sand paper, and I should have gone up to 600 grit sand paper, even though it isnt required to use 600, it would give it a better result.

The company that makes it is called PC Racing. I picked it up at my local dealer for 20 bucks. I really like how it works, like I pointed out in my previous post about it there are a couple things about it that I don't like. But the important thing if you use it is to just take your time. I hurried a little on these plastics.

O yea not riding for 9 months is starting to drive me crazy. The big things I need are wheels and tires and brakes. Other than that its mostly the little stuff that you need to make it work, like levers, bars, greeseing some parts, and gromets. Then I gotta make shure its put together right before I start beating on it.

Why not instead of shelling out cash for new back fender you just race cut the one you have and polish it back up like you did the back.

You mean cut them so that its like the fronts where there are barley and fenders? I never thought of that. I've seen it done a couple time, and I really wouldn't want to go riding with them like that, but that would make it atleast look good untill I get new plastics. Thanks for the idea.:)

I would have started with a 400ex frame. On our big bore 88 250R I just had no luck with it after making it a 302. It constantly cracked at the cradle, the motor mounts, and it spread like wild fire.

After the quad finally ran good and was fun, that pos frame held it back. So it was sold. If I could have done it all over again, I would have just purchase and ex frame. Almost all the parts are interchangable.

I hope you have good luck with yours, and we did reinforce/gusset it too. It still cracked!

Other then that your quad looks sweet. Good luck with it.

The only things that are a direct bolt on to the 400ex from the 250r is the front end. Also the 400ex doesn't handle as good as the 250r, and sits higher up. I wanted to build a 250r so I got a 250r frame. There is also no big bore motor in plans for this anytime soon, a car, and college in another year will prevent that. I know that alot of people run 310's and 350's on a stock frame and have had no problems. My gues is that you just got a junk frame. I know that this frame is in about as good condition as you can get a stock frame. When I bought it, it hadent been welded on or re painted. There were a few minor cracks that I welded up and it's as good as new. If I have problems with this frame, I know how to fix it, or I will just get an aftermarket frame. Used one's are going for under a grand now.

The bike was mint when we got it. But just was too slow. Stock they are underpowered in my opinion. Just figured I would warn you if you wanted to build it up some. Going one tooth smaller on the countershaft sprocket on the stock motor helped. And Lrd portjob, cool head, v-force reeds and an exhaust still wasn't enough. Still had to get a bb cylinder and a 38mm air stryker carb for it.

well I got the RIGHT ball joints in today, so the front end is more or less together. So this is the first time I have had the front hubs and spindles on it, and it's starting to bring the look together. Also the number of parts on the table is getting smaller, that means 2 things, the quad is getting closer to being done, and I need mroe parts.:p

I am going to have fun getting the rear brakes apart, the bolts are pritty stuck, and I some of the bolts that hold on the top to the brake fluid resevoir are going to have to be taken out with one of those things that you use when the head is stripped. And I got the bar bolted down to the angle I want them at.

Well I don't have any new pictures, the camera is lose somewhere between maine, massachussettes, and New York. But since the last post, I got the front end together except for tightening the bolts that hold the a arms to the frame, the front brakes are in, the brake fluid resevoir and brake lever just need to be polished then they can be bled. I got the anti-fade and the snap ring figured out so the rear end is together, and the hubs are on. I have a coolant resevoir off of a predator thats waiting to get installed, and the pipe will be back on tomorow. I am waiting for radiator shrouds, chain and sprokets, foot pegs and a tether kill switch that are in the mail, or will be in the mail soon. So here is what is left for me to get done before next thursday night.

Make mounts for the plastic
mount the coolant rezzie
get hose clamps for the shock rezzies
tighen down and loctight the rest of the bolts
bleed the brakes
get the rear brakes set up
hook up the chain and sprokets
hook up gas lines
connect the kill switch
get it running
replace a gasket
put on the exaust
buy some small bolts for the plastic
get an air filter and make a braket for it
jet it and do plug chops
and wheels and tires, I'm borrowing some for the Rausch ride

Well I know there is still some things I need done to it, but I'm 90% shure it will be ready for Rausch in 6 days.

TheFontMaster
08-16-2005, 02:45 PM
Well I finaly found the camera, so here are some much needed updated pictures. I got in an AC racing wide grab bar I really like how that looks. The rear plastics are painted with the plastic paint, now all the cracks and zip ties blend in from a distance. I got in the radiator shrowds, foot pegs, and they are now on. The pipe, I re-painted, and that is now bolted up. The right side case is polished better, and the gasket behind it has been replaced. The shock rezzies are hose clamped to the frame, the front brake master cylinder will be polished tonight then the brakes can be hooked up and will be ready to get bled. The kill switch should be in mabey today, or tomorow, then I can finaly start this beast. I got the rear end done. The anti-fade is on and tightened, and the rear hubs are on. Almost everything is tightend down and loctighted.

All thats left is to get a seat cover made, make front plastic mounts, get it started, the air filter and outerwear will be here tomorow, then that will be bolted up. And some bolts need to be tightened.

if your gonnna be running in mud then i guess you should be using the snorkel. im really not sure though, ive run in mud with a nacs cap and a open lid with not much trouble, unless your going into 3 feet deep streams?

TheFontMaster
09-13-2005, 06:23 PM
Well I won't be going through 3 feet deep streams often, but this is mainly a trail quad, that will be raced when I get the chance to. So I am more concerned with no water or mud getting in the motor than a little extra power. I can always just switch the jetting evey now and then for when I want a lid on the air box, or when I want it off.

Yea they are full bores. I still haven't had the money to replace the plastics with new Maier ones, and same goes for the seat. I've been looking for a part time job, but I haven't had any luck so far. All the money that I do get goes right into gas for the car. But I did get all the parts, and have it running really good. Thanks for the offer, it's a nice cover and would go great with my 250r if it wasn't for that little bit of red that it has on it.

Ehh I like the bumper. Plus I got it free from blingstar when I started running the Quad of the Month. But a nice tag chrome bumper would look sick on it.
