I just drag raced my little brother on his '02 400ex. We were on asphalt. His bike is totally stock except he took out the spark arrester, and has installed nerf bars. You can see all the mods of my 400ex below. The problem is I will beat him off the line, and in 3rd gear he comes screaming past me! I dont know why. I'm only 35 lbs heavier than him. Is it my gearing. Would tire weight be an issue? I have heavy Pure Sport XC tires and he has some cheap light tires. Please help!

I powershift.... Shifting and not letting off the gas.

alot of it is your heavy tires and gearing. however i have razr 2's and 14/39 and ppl cant pass me till im pinned in 5th gear for a while. i think u need to check your jetting and try to change how you shift?

could i be revving it too high before i shift? i dont let it overrev but could i be out of the meat of the powercurve? if im too rich will that hinder performance?

might b reving to high, 400ex hits max horsepower b4 it revs out but i think its mainly ur sproket.....my mods r listed below but a friend of mine has an 04 400ex with just an hmf slip on and he can beat me

umm, because your bike isnt "modded" and essentially you have the same bikes, with one having a slightly free'er flowing exhuast.. and in accuallity, his is lighter, do to only having nerf bars, and you having all the other stuff.. so it would even out..

When you have a "modded" bike, you have some motor work done, not just a slip on, or skid plates or a set of handle bars.. THAT is why he is beating you.. the 14 front, doesnt make a difference.. i mean it does, and essentially in the long run youll be slower than he is, but you will pull harder through the gears than he will..

All in all on this issue, im going to pinpoint this to driver error, learn how to shift, and when to shift, and then you MIGHT beat him.. but i doubt it..

STOCK BIKES RULE! pfft

well, when i said modded i mean its more modified than his bike. And his nerfs are in addition to the stock stuff. He has done nothing for weight issues, so im betting that hes heavier than me.

Swap front sprockets and see what happens;)

Maybe even swap riders and see what happens.......

Also, double check your throttle cable adjustment. I had a problem getting beat by my buddies stock bike until i realized i had my throttle adjustment WAY off! A properly tuned stock bike will give any poorly tuned "performance" bike a run for its money.

well....imma share my opinion on this....i know might sound dumb to some people but here goes my story

a buddy of mine has a 01 400ex....both bikes were on stock bore, and everything cept he had a stock exhaust with the s/a removed, k&n air filter, and rejetted....that was the only difference my 400ex was as stock as the day i bought it and we raced and id beat his *** every time....simply because i believe NO 2 motors are built the exact same...ive rode some stock 400ex's that felt like they had more power than other stock 400ex's its something weird like that but i do believe no 2 motors are built the same

thats just my theory on that...

on a drag, you must always start a drag for the second time with the bike of your buddy if you want to see the real motor power....
