The front is a 14 thooth, I run a 13, and then stock on the back.
I race super cross , and with the 8 inch wheels and 18 inch tires, I like the way it pulls out of the corners, but I loose top end speed which on the longer moto cross tracks with longer straights it hurts a little.

Running 14/40 Sidewinder TI Moly Sprockets and chain. Stuff is industructable!

I am going to try a 13/40 in the near future, call me crazy but I like the way the 400EX feels in the gearing department and want to see if that combo will get the gearing low enough to lug through muddy sections and up hills a little better.

Last year at the IronMan, I was stuck in the top of 2nd and bouncing off the limiter like crazy in all the strait sections, if I shifted to third it would bog the motor down because of all the mud.

14/39 w/18" tire , 13/39 w/20" tire. I like it cause it pulls a 2nd gear start every time. Just be ready for the rev limiter hit a little faster.
