WHITEHORSE – A renewable resource council in the Whitehorse area would like to see some restrictions put on the use of off-road vehicles.

The Laberge Resource Council says some sensitive areas around Whitehorse have become overrun by recreational riders.

The council says the vehicles are damaging the land and disturbing wildlife populations.

The use of popular recreation vehicles like snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes has come up before, but there's no consensus in the territory on regulating their use.

Vice chair Manfred Hoefs says instead of trying to come up with a territory-wide restriction, the board would like to see limited pilot projects restricting ATV use in some areas around the capital.

"So we are not proposing any kind of regulation that is universal, or wide in scope, we want to address the issue in a few pilot projects and see how it works," he says.

The Laberge council will likely have to push for changes on its own.

At a meeting of resource councils last week, there was little support for its concerns.

Delegates from other communities say if there are problems they are usually caused by recreational riders from Whitehorse.

They say they do not want their rights or access curtailed because of a Whitehorse problem.
