I have a 2002 400Ex, and it is using oil, a lot more then it should be. I am pretty new at this, and am a pretty good mechanic. I would take it to the honda shop to have them look at it but i have a lot more time then i do money. So if someone could give me some idea of what to look at let me know.

Would it be a very difficult job to do myself. And how much do u guys think it would run me to order a new set of valve seals and piston rings?

valve seals would only be a few bucks, chances are with your 02 you may have the honda piston in it,i would just opt for a wiseco setup, you can get a topend kit for around $100 if you look around.may as well replace the piston since your taken it down that far.if it only smokes when you first start it and until it warms up then its your valve seals.if f it doesnt once its warm then your rings are good.:)

top end kit is usually piston and rings and a gasket set.try the venders on this site or just look at any mag for a add.can get through almost anybody:)
