are there any specific things that people do everytime they start there 450s? i know on my 400 ex if it was fairly warm all id do was 2 pumps of the throttle and then push the button and it would start right up real quick.

I just turn on the choke if it is cold and give it a kick and it starts. No problem. It starts better than my old 300EX I had. Nothing really special. BUT DO NOT GIVE IT ANY THROTTLE WHEN KICKING!!!

no tricks at all. if your jetting is correct, it should start 1 kick hot or cold 95% of the time. you must use the choke and hot start though.

JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE SAID. CHOKE IT AND USUALLY 2 KICKS!

If my 450 has been sitting in the trailer for a week or so w/out being started, I can usually pump the throttle a couple of times and give it a "dry-kick" (just push the kicker down) to prime 'er up. Then kick it once or twice hard and she'll fire right up!

This has worked better for me than using the choke, even when its cold :D

But most of the time, now that the weather is warmer, I can hop on it and it'll kick over on 1 or 2 kicks no problem.

I second this motion. No "priming" or whatever needed. Turn on the choke, it'll start right up.

don't pump the throttle, you could foul the plug. just hold the throttle wide open and kick, she'll start right up!

I never touch the throttle. ever!!!!! choke on and push on the kick start until it gets tight and start it. never more than twice hot cold or whatever. you should never touch / twist / push the throttle and in 8 months i have never used hot start and i live in vegas. If you do use the hot start dont touch the throttle until the bike is running.

just my 2$ worth of info:D

i thought the hot start used the heat of the engine to make it easier to start a bike and didnt have anything to do with the actual temperature

Hot start just lets extra air in to lean it out a bit. Kinda like a reverse choke. It works great when you stall a hot engine. Anyone who's ever ridden a 350X can appreciate this.

As for cold starts, just choke unless it's been sitting awhile. Mine sits for a couple weeks at a time and it takes many, many kicks if I just choke it and try to kick it. If I stop kicking and pump the throttle a few times it fires on the very next kick every time. I've got the HRC kit if it matters.

It's ok to pump the throttle before kicking, just keep it closed during.

shoot yeah like everyone else has stated, pull choke, one half throttle pump, and then first or second kick she breaths fire!.

as far as hot start i used mine right when i got it and out of no where it just stopped working. something broke in it, i guess. so i just don't use it anymore and it starts fine when hot, i just don't give it any gas when kicking because if so it will bite back! i have had my knee meet my chin once from doing that.

If its cold out, i ussually just pump the gas twice, choke it, and it starts first kick for me EVERY time.

u don't have to kick it really hard, for me what works best is if i don't kick it as hard as possible. If i give it a half a kick, it starts everytime. but if i try to kick it hard, she won't start.
