I use degreaser, not chemical degreaser like the ones in cans. A more water based degreaser. But I think the one K&N sell works best.

The K+N spray is the best stuff to clean it with...

ive even used laundry detergent
K&N says mild soap and water will work to clean it. You must use an oil that is designed for paper filters to reoil.

You don't ever use gas to clean a filter. It breaks down the glue that holds the filter together.

Gas is the LAST thing you should use on a K&N filter...:huh

A bucket of warm water and a small amount
of simple green.
Cuts the dirt nice.

i usually use a wire wheel to cut the dirt packed on. i try to stay on the filter and clean it pretty often, like once every 3 or 4 years. i then prefer to not use oil because it will flow better.

You oughta try a sand blaster to get the really caked-on crud off and it increases the air flow too!
Why do you guys use those filter thingys anyway? They are such a hassle. I just took mine off and I found that the dirt just flies right out my exhaust! No problem!:macho

The only filter I have is the small screen attached to the side of the hair dryer that I'm using as a supercharger. I clean it with gasoline, never had any problems.

those are some pretty good ideas too. i will have to experiment. i think i will on my buddies bike though. :o
I use the K and N cleaner they sell and the oil. The recharger pack they call it. Heres a trick i heard on here and ive used after u clean ur outwear put a lil of the oil on it and WD40 because dust clngs right to it and yup it stopped a lot of dust form getting to the k and n.

and there's people out there that can't figure out why there k&n lets dirt in and they've got the nerve to bash the company about it:rolleyes:
I use dawn and soak it in a 5 gallon bucket to disolve the old filter oil then spray it gently with a garden hose from the inside out until water is clear, then air dry and re-oil
