What kind of oil should i run in my 400ex? temperatures stay pretty warm-hot around this time of year with summer comin it. Its usually between 70-90+ around summer and its like 50-70 now. My dad went to the honda shop today and told them that i had a 400ex and they gave him 3 bottles of GN4 motorcycle oil, SAE 10w-40 SJ. Is this a good oil?

wut does 10w-40 mean, doesnt it have to do with the temperature? cuz it gets really hot around here

those numbers represent the oils viscosity.
viscosity, or oil weight, refers to how thick or thin the oil is. the temperature requirement set for oil by the society of automotive engineers (sae) is 0°F (low) and 210°F (high). oils meeting the sae's low temperatiure requirements have a "w" after the viscosity rating (in your case 10W) and oils that meet the high ratings have no letter (in your case 40). an oil is rated for viscosity by heating it to a specified temperature, and then allowing it to flow out of a specifically sized hole. its viscosity rating is determined by the length of time it takes to flow out of the hole. if it flows quickly, it gets a low rating and vice versa. our quads need an oil that is thin enough for cold starts, and thick enough when it gets hot. since oil gets thinner when heated, and thicker when cooled, we use a multi-grade oil. these oils meet sae specifications for the low temperature requirements of a light oil and the high temperature requirement of a heavy oil.
