i got a 400ex (2004)

and in the trails, I need more ground clearance....

I was thinking about 22 in for the rear, but the trails are REALLY tight so I want to gear it down to compensate for the 22 in the back....

so what front would you reconmend, (i have seen people talking about 13T for the front) where do you get these and would 300ex sprockets mount on the 400ex

thanks

A good rule of thumb is: Every inch on the rear tires is worth 1.5-2 teeth on the rear sprocket. Since you're already at 15/38 stock gearing, I would run a 14/39 with those 22's. This would get you pretty darn close to stock.

ok thanks...

should I have to do anything with the chain (add or recomove links) or do you think the adjustment would handle it?

and would 300ex sprockets fit on 400ex (just curious)

thanks again

i know I forgot something...

what is the best rear tire (that comes 22inch) for most puncture resistance (damn rocks)

and what wheel would you reconmend it on

again, trails are very rocky

thanks

With that gearing, I think you're chain adjustment should be ok since you're going up one on the rear sprocket (using more chain) and going down one on the countershaft sprocket (using less chain). It should equal out pretty well. And about the 300EX sprockets, I really have no idea sorry. I'm not a big fan of using other quad parts, except for the ones that are actually the same like a lot of 250R parts.

For the 22 inch rears you have lots of options. You can run Razr 2's which are 6-ply, Holeshot HD's (also 6-ply but very heavy), Kenda Knarly's, etc. I don't use trail/XC tires so I'm not too sure which one you'll like the most. The ones I listed are some of the most popular ones so that should tell you something.

As far as the rims go, you're gonna want something that is at least .190 thickness and preferably reinforced or beadlocks since you will be riding in rocks. They're still going to get dinged up though. The best rims you could possibly run in rocky conditions are Hiper carbon fiber beadlocks. I run them for MX and will never EVER go back to an aluminum rim again (way too many bent rims).

i went to 22's for the same reason and to me it was a noticable load on the motor, so i dropped to a 14tooth sprocket and it helped huge.. after a few times it seemed too much so i found a steel 37tooth for the rear sprocket..

it feels good running in 2nd and 3rd on trails..

i was afraid that if i had just gotten a 39tooth for the rear, id need to shim the skid plate..

btw, mine are 4-ply and they seemed heavy.. i imagine the weight goes up on a 6ply..

I run 22" rear & 23" front bear claws on stock rims, GREAT TIRE !!
I feel a little tipy with the taller tires. The claws slide well under power. Stock rims are very strong, If you get new rims get the bigest rims that you can to match the tires ( less sidewall ). If I had the money I would have put 23-8-11 front and 22-12-10 rear. I still need to regear also.

Yep, 20 inch rears, 22 inch fronts come stock.

the 300ex sprocket won't work on a 400ex.
