for tight trails the ex is probably the best quad you can get. as for the mud well it's only 2 wheel drive so you know it's not all that good. but she not all that bad in the mud.

I have a 05' 400ex, and i used to ride a suzuki 400....and let me tell you this 1rst hand. Theres trails in Ocotillo , and i rode with a 450r and a 500 polaris.....i was right on there ***** the whole time....theres some tight trails with hill climbs and heavy sand and also long flat spots......and they never lost me.....going up Blow sand the 450r is only 2quad lenths ahead of me, So i have alot more respect for the 400 than i ever thought i would.

I havent token it to the sand so i have no idea there, But for the trails i Love it.

Hope that helps.

the EX is a great trail bike, probably one of the best handling quads of all time second to the 250r, for this reason, i'm going to have a hard time getting rid of my ex:(

well depending on how tight the trails are there might be but it's not to bad ones you get use to it.

plus you could go with an auto clutch system. i personally would never get one because then i wouldnt be able to dump the clutch and do wheelies and other stuff, but i think the auto clutch would be a good way to go for some1 thats not experienced and doesnt like clutches anyways

if you are talking about the rekluse auto clutch. well it's not avalable for the EX yet. and you don't lose you normal clutch. you can still use you clutch like normal but if for some reason you stop you don't have to pull it in:eek2: . so you can still dump the clutch to do your wheelies.

I love the 400 over anything in trails, and as long as you don't bury it you can make it through mud. As far as clutch work, I geared mine down a little so that it took some of the shifting out. It allowed me to not have to drop a gear everytime I got in a tight spot. I have never rode with anything that left me in the woods.
