Good fresh tires, Skid plates, and definately SUSPENSION! Worry about motor work after you cover these bases.

DEFFENTLY! take the 02! the 01s have transmission problems and will cost you in the long run. as for mods, get some shocks, probablly just some fronts and then send the rear off to be rebuilt. skid plates and get some 22 inch rear tires(for clearance issues if your going to be riding deep rutted and rocky trails) and gear down the front sproket 1 tooth, itll be right about stock. i guess a set of nerfs would do you good. i wouldnt trim the fenders if i was you, trails tend to have mud/water in them. a steering stabilizer would help tons. i would get a plus one axle and either stock width arms or possibly plus 1. after all of this, mess with the motor. hope i helped some what.

I race a Raptor in XC and here are my mods

You do not need to build your motor but I did it anyway. I would definitely do the suspension first. As far as extended axle and A arms i prefer to stay stock width due to the series I race, some of the courses are really tight.

686 Big bore kit
Pro Flow intake with Foam filter leave airbox lid on.
Hmf exhaust , jet kit.
Swing arm skid, chassis skid, a arm skids
Extended foot pegs with kick up
CYCRA hand guards
Fasst Co. Flexx Bars
Pro Design Kill switch
Case saver
X ring chain, i stayed with stock gearing due to the motor work.
IMS Intimidator bumper,
AC Grab bar
Holeshot HDs rear
Shredder Front tire
Hiper beadlocks
Elka Suspension
IMS 5 gallon fuel tank
Gripper seat cover
Carbon Fiber hood
Pro Design Power shifter
Spider Grips
Denton Steering Stabilizer

There sure is, but is the price difference between the 01' and the 02' worth the $800 in parts and the extra cost in labor($65-$75 an hour)? Its like playing a game of russian rullet with 01's. You can certainly roll the dice.....It may blow up.......It may not, but do you feel like taking the chance when you have a perfectly good 02' with 1hr on it sitting right beside it? I would NOT recommend getting the 01', but it is your money. :)

If you want to keep it at the bare minimum cost wise, I'd still buy the 02'. Then just buy some skids and some good tires. Suspension can come later, and motor work can definately come later down the road. An aftermarket pipe alone on the raptor SERIOUSLY wakes it up.

I ran an 01 at Loretta Lynn's last year only to find that the stock tie rods are not very strong. On top of the protection listed above, get some decent tie rods. You don't need the engine mods as stated.
You can upgrade the tranny to the 02 for around $800. I personally have had no problems with mine. There is some controversy out there about the use of reverse on the 01's that aid in the transmission failures. I diconnected the reverse cable on mine and never used it. (knew my next quad wasn't going to have reverse, so I got ready).
I now ride a predator but I still have the raptor and it shows no signs of a bad transmission.

look for Sam Coe preformance, they make the upgrade. you could also get the parts from a newer machine. call alba and tell them you have an 01 raptor and want the newer raptors tranny parts to fix the issue. they know what exactly you will need
