This marks the second year that Tomahawk MX has hosted a team race. Last years race drew some top names and this year's event didn't disapoint!

With the likes of Chris and Joe Borich, Mike Lucas and John Cunningham, Rob Hertz, Sean Neidlinger and more started arriving mid morning.

Moose Racing's "Brian Weber" gives pre race instructions and riders chose thier line position by drawing pre numbered cards.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:10 PM
Weber asked the crowd of riders if they prefered 2 hours or 3 hours as the time limit for the race. Almost every hand was raised to choose a 3 hour race!

Mike Lucas sits aboard his ATV Addiction YFZ prior to the start.

The father and son team of Joe and Chris Borich on the line.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:13 PM
Rob Hertz was itching to get this thing kicked off. The day was bright and sunny, but the warm temperatures combined with dust was going to be on the menu today!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:15 PM
The quads were finally lined up according to the order the rider drew at the riders meeting. This field had every skill level imaginable, from Pro to a team that consisted of 2 riders that had never raced before!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:17 PM
A blast from a shotgun marks the start of this 3 hour race. The riders race to thier quads!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:18 PM
Mike Lucas grabbed the holeshot on his YFZ.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:19 PM
Things started happening quick as the entire field raced to the first turn. These two riders swing wide trying to get a clean line out of the dust!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:22 PM
Lucas did his best to hold off Chris Borich but before they entered the first leg of the woods, Chris was in the lead.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:24 PM
As lap 1 was completed, a new crop of teammates hit the track. Joe Borich was out front holding off a hard charging Dave Bishop.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:26 PM
A few riders had a handfull of throttle on the fast MX section

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:28 PM
The MX track was in good shape for the quads. After a 3 hour bike race, the jumps were still crisp and big air could be had if you dared:D

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:30 PM
Joe Borich held the lead for his team, and as lap 3 started Chris came out on fire:macho

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:32 PM
Other riders soon follwed suit and it became a show to all the fans lining this area as the quads cleared the tabletop.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:34 PM
The first 6 or 8 laps kept most of the riders in check on the MX track. That would change, with 3 hours to get used to the jumps:cool:

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:36 PM
Expecting Chris Borich to emerge first, I was scratching my head when Team Hertz popped up in 1st. Not that John isnt a great rider, but unseating Chris in the woods is a task and a half:p

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:38 PM
Mike lucas had moved into 2nd and I couldnt even hear Borich's 450r which was usually thundering up this section

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:39 PM
Finally Chris came hammering past in 4th. At this time I could only assume he had gotton hung up allowing a few riders to get past him.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:43 PM
by the time Chris took the track I had recieved word that he had indeed been in a nasty spill. He hooked a stump and it sent him 7 ways from sunday:( With some nasty rock rash and cuts all over his back, he was now in 5th position and in pain.

Infact, I was being informed of the situation as I took this picture and I replied to the person supplying me with info that Chris just came by me at mach 3..I dont think he will let it slow him down:D

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:47 PM
the other riders must have known that being caught in that wreck was a chance they had to capitalize on. After that 1 lap, the entire pace of the race changed as Team Borich was forced to turn it on or finish out the race somewhere other then out front!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:49 PM
The top 4 teams were flat out on a different level. The pace they set had alot of us wondering if they could maintain it for 2 more hours.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:51 PM
Another run in with a tree left Team Borich with a broken spindle. Now they would be forced to run down the pack with 1 machine. Here Joe Borich holds onto 4th place as he races down the landing ramp of the tracks freestyle jump!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:52 PM
Jaime Bougher works his way thru the small MX track.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:53 PM
Tired hands and too much throttle:eek:

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:56 PM
2 hours in and the action just kept getting better! Joe Borich was riding like a madman to hold the time Chris would make up during his turn at the controls. At times I would have to look twice to see who was who on that quad. They rode thier hearts out today!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 05:58 PM
The remainder of the field was filled with great riders. As the day wore on the air started getting bigger and the speeds just kept getting faster!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:00 PM
Riders on thier own, with no dust to contend with were having lots of fun!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:01 PM
A decent mix of track and course greeted every rider.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:02 PM
There was even a few 2 strokes out showing they can still get the job done!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:05 PM
Mike Lucas was riding a solid race. After the race was over, I asked him how it was out there.

He replied:

" You had to either be on the gas and pushing to stay out front, or be on the gas trying to keep up".

He must have kept pushing because Team Lucas went home with 2nd place!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:06 PM
Dust swallows Sean Neidlinger as he works thru the corner

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:07 PM
Chris had moved his Team to 3rd place with around an hour to go. The top 5 teams were running so close, it was going to be exciting to see who would come out with the win!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:09 PM
Joe Borich had the R wrung out as he did all he could to move up a position as time started running out.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:10 PM
2 hours of racing and these guys have energy to ham it up for me:p

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:12 PM
There was no play when Chris Borich took the track. Late in the race this rider would prove that even after a wicked spill he wasnt going to be denied a win or atleast the chance to fight it out with the leader:macho

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:13 PM
Team mates "Tag" out and the next rider is off!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:14 PM
A few teams shared a quad, either by choice or by the need due to broken parts.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:16 PM
Dave Bishop (aka Karizz) takes a breather during his down time from the race. Severe dust and heat took thier toll, but on the track you couldnt tell as he rode extremely hard all day helping bring his team to a 4th place finish!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:19 PM
Back on the track, Joe Borich was once again hammering and holding his spot. The way it was setting up it was going to be close. Chris would gain a few seconds and Joe would hold it.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:21 PM
Jamie Bougher working his R thru the tight supercross track.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:23 PM
As the leaders get scored, I was feeling like Team Borich wasnt going to have enough time to pull this thing off:(

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:25 PM
At a few minutes after 5pm, the race would have been over if the riders had not voted for a 3 hour race. Here Chris Borich takes command of the quad with 1 hour to go.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:27 PM
Jaime Bougher working the downhill double double section.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:28 PM
All the riders were handling the MX track just fine after 2 hours of racing!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:30 PM
Team Borich was up to 3rd, chasing down front runner Mike Lucas and second place Team Hertz.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:32 PM
Blake Kramer was riding a very smart race and looked good out there!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:34 PM
Joe Borich was hauling the mail when he got the quad with 4 or 5 laps to go.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:42 PM
The YFZ rider looks over to see who had been screaming at him for the last 300 yards in the woods:p

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:44 PM
The dust was probably the biggest obstacle out there today, not counting the warm temperature, rocks, stumps, ruts:p

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:46 PM
Rob Hertz was running around 15 seconds infront of Joe Borich at this point. Joe was not giving up and just kept coming.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:48 PM
Team Hertz was out front, with Team Lucas on thier dust trail. This lap would see Chris Borich put on the speed and bring his team ever so close to sealing the deal.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:50 PM
Mike Lucas would have to deal with a hard charging Chris Borich who was fast approaching.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:51 PM
The leaders had at best 15 seconds on Borich and he was all business as he did what he does best......flat out fly!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:53 PM
Seen here in 4th position, Chris Borich was about to unleash the beast and provide those on the track and those watching with a riding display most of them had never seen:eek:

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:56 PM
With a few hundered yards left on this lap, he wasnt going to settle for not grabbing atleast one more spot

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:57 PM
Chris had closed the door on 3rd place Team Hertz for this lap. The 3 hour mark was approaching and it was taking its toll on rider and machine.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 06:59 PM
Chris had done all he could do, now it was Joe Borich's turn to apply some heat of his own. Chris rushed off into the woods to cheer his father on.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 07:00 PM
Joe did his part and Chris would get one more crack at making this all work out.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 07:02 PM
Anyone who thought they had seen Chris on fire earlier had'nt seen anything:eek: When he went out for his last lap I had trouble keeping infront of him to get pictures.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 07:03 PM
By my watch, Chris had roughly a 10 second lead over 2nd place Mike Lucas at this section early on the last lap.

Pappy
04-10-2005, 07:05 PM
Near the end of the lap I counted a 35 second gap between 1st and 2nd place. Thats huge given the talent that was running behind Borich!

Pappy
04-10-2005, 07:06 PM
Mike Lucas wasnt going down easily as he kicked it into high gear

Pappy
04-10-2005, 07:08 PM
Joe Borich went on to not only keep the lead Chris had, he made it wider! Joe was riding the best i'd ever seen him ride and this win was well earned! Joe clears the finish line and takes the checkered flag!

top 5 teams:

Borich/Borich
Lucas/Cunningham
Hertz/Tincher
Bishop / Neidlinger
Brant/Kirby

There was no comotion on who the top 3 were:
1st C Borich/ B Borich,
2nd M Lucas/ J Cunningham
3rd T Hertz/ K Tincher
I don't know if you ever raced with Chris Borich or really understand how fast he was going. There is a reason he is ranked #3 in the GNCCs he is hyperfast. Me and Rob teamed up with different riders cause we are both A riders. Rob and Blake went a lap down due to Blake punching a hole in his case. With two laps or so to go, Chris was behind me going through the MX section before the barrels but never passed me they passed us at the rider change. I gave it everything I had to keep in front of Chris. I knew it would be only a matter of time before they took over the lead. All the teams put there heads down and charged all race long because they didn't want to let there teammate down. So understand that Chris is Hyperfast and we give it are all to block him for as long as possible. :)

no doubt....

its very hard to explain to anyone that hasnt rubbed bark with Borich or any of the top GNCC riders just how incredibly fast they are. the top 3 teams battled as hard as any racers ive seen race each other and it made for an awesome event to watch!

the results that i originally posted are the final standings according to the official i spoke with.

We will be doing this again Nov 20th and we would like to see 50 or more teams.....I think everyone has fun and it is quite a challenge combining Motocross, Woods, and Supercross and a lot of laps.

Many of us for the bike race teamed up as 1 Motocross rider with 1 woods rider and I would like to see this for the quads....more MX riders...I think you guys would have a blast and someone needs to come give Team Borich a fit (they are 2 for 2 at the IronBoss)

We are working on sponsors for the fall race and would love to put up a BIG purse in the 4 digit figures for the winner (but we need to get 50 or so teams!)....this race came totally out of the track owners pocket (prize money, ambulance fee, insurance, etc)...with some product prizes from Maxxis, Moose Racing, Smith Optics, and Parts Unlimited.

Thanks again for coming out, make sure you keep an eye out for details on the Nov 20th event!

It's awesome to see the enthusiasm the Borich team has for racing. I look up to both Chris and his Dad (Joe) for the team effort they put into the sport. @ the GNCC's, Chris lays it all out from start to finish. If another rider is close to him he wants a battle, if there isn't he wants to put distance between himself and second place ASAP. I respect that. No rider thinks the same or has the exact same riding style. Some realize the best route to winning is to set a fast, but safe pace the 1st lap or 2 and then pushing it more towards the end. Others think GO! GO! GO! from start to finish. My style favors the one who gives it everything from start to finish. If I have a chance to pass for the lead on the 1st lap.........I'm taking it! Bill may have ---5 CHAMPIONSHIPS--- under his belt, but his style is different from that of mine. He is very smart. The analyzer w/ speed! I respect him for this, for having his own style. I am still learning from him.
The photos and coverage @ this event and others from the GNCC/ GNC series are totally awesome. ATV Riders is by far the best website for racing. Thanks Harlen.
I would like to see more events like this one take place. Maybe we could get Racer Productions to have a MECHANIC/ RACER team event. Team races are always fun! Good luck to everyone @ South Carolina. I'll see U there!

You go brandon!
:D

Pappy
04-12-2005, 01:37 PM
I was also informed by Harlen that i had better post some pics of John Cunningham #72. John is repairing the atvriders.com RV and if i dont post some pics of him it might not make it to the next race:devil:

Pappy
04-12-2005, 01:42 PM
I would also like to explain the posting of certain riders more then others. its not by choice, when the riders are close to each other in dusty conditions, sometimes the 2nd rider thru is so engulfed by dust that the camera will not focus and the shot isnt worth posting:(

Pappy
04-12-2005, 01:44 PM
But we do try and get atleast 1 or 2 shots of every rider we can!

Pappy
04-12-2005, 01:45 PM
so i will from this point forward, try and post pictures after the coverage has been completed.

Pappy
04-12-2005, 01:47 PM
the bad part about posting random pictures is we dont always know who they are:( i wish more folks would walk up and say hello...i dont bite...harlen does:eek:

Pappy
04-12-2005, 01:58 PM
I will search and see if I have more, im sure i do:p

im not sure what happened to this rider. i believe he was on the team that had never raced before. after the start he came riding back:(

Pappy
04-12-2005, 03:58 PM
you can blame Chris for the dust:p

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:01 PM

i bet Moose Racing is pretty happy, you cant swing a bent tie rod without hitting someone wearing thier gear:)

they sure had the entry to the scoring area tight!

 its red's old fo'hundy

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:10 PM
this jump is actually hard to shoot, you can only hear the quad coming and dont see it until its over the lip. then you have to find it, zoom in and shoot

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:11 PM
Chris didnt hit it hard the first few laps, but he was moving fast enough i had trouble keeping him in focus:p

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:12 PM
thats my speed for riding:D not too fast, not too slow:scary:

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:14 PM

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:22 PM
the small mx track is pretty tight. it wasnt too bad during the race but my kids usually ride on it if that gives you an idea of how small it is:p

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:23 PM
the new MX track was used, they only have it about 1/4 the way finished but its got some serious jumps on it.

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:24 PM
the tree's are so tight at Tomahawk that getting woods pictures is hard. if you get on the track you get the snot roosted out of you so i try to avoid it:p

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:25 PM
can you charge harlen double:confused: :blah:

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:27 PM
id love to see a MX rider and a XC rider team up, except have the course laid out so they each only do either the MX or XC portion they are accustom too.

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:28 PM
ive only seen 3 or 4 quads clear the big table

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:29 PM
i could only stay in this section for short periods. then id have to leave and clean my camera

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:30 PM
if only 1 rider came thru, it was the perfect lighting

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:32 PM
i was hoping a clear shot would happen with someone busting high on the berm

Pappy
04-12-2005, 04:33 PM
i switched sides to change the shot but by then the corner was shot with dust
