View Full Version : Leaded Vs. Unleaded Gas

Heres my situation. I can buy unleaded 92-93 octane from the pump where I live. I thought about running one tank of 105 or 110 just to see how it runs. But the higher 105 and 110 octane gas is leaded. Is this ok for my 400EX? Also why is the higher octane leaded? Thanks

the leaded fuel should be okay. Do you happen to know how many grams of led are in it? The short answer to your question about higher octane is that led raises the octane rating of fuel.

It is recommend by engine builders to run leaded fuel because it keeps your valves from burning and runs cooler. I got some lead substitute to add to my pump gas.

the lead makes it run cooler, but is it ok to run in the 400??

Yep, the cooler the better. This is true in almost all cases regarding aircooled engines....

lead is good just dont drink it, some guys like a little MARVEL MYSTERY OIL in the gas once in a while . We sometimes run these motors on alcohol and use that as a top lube.

So, it wouldnt hurt the engine or anything?

the only reason gas is unleaded now-a-days is because of the cadaladic(sp) converters on all the cars. the lead shorts the life of them. lead is a good thing for the motors though. the reason higher octane fuels r leaded is because they r used mainly for racing. race cars dont use cadaladic(sp) converters.

Nicely said crashinmatt. Since atv's dont have cats. (converters) at least NOT YET, you can run the leaded fuel and your engine will run a little cooler as long as your not jetted to lean.

YEAH and methyltetraethylbutane(lead) is very poisonous, they used to put it in housepaint. Some new streetbikes have catylictic converters. When they took the lead out of the gas cars started burning up valves more so the Auto Industry redisigned the valves & valve seats in newer cars ( after the 70's, they also took all the compression out and the FEDS, and INSRANCE COMPANIES started taxing horsepower, that was the end of the early musclecars). deanfastway & crashinmatt are both 100% correct. Those are the reasons why you can run it in current auto's. The 400EX on the other hand does not fall under any of those conditions....so.....run that leaded petro if ya got it! :D
