it is Steel. you can Stick weld it or MIG it, or even TIG it. One easy way to tell what it is is by using a magnet. If a magnet sticks to it is is a ferrous metal, cantaing iron, and is most likely steel. A magnet will not stick to aluminium or stainless steel.

almost all factory frames are mild steel

Then it is not a true stainless steel, but a type of semi-ferrous alloy. a true stainless steel is non magnetic.

only quads with aluminum frame is the cannondale, the new 450's have aluminum subframes though.

make sure you have someone experienced doing the welding. To hot or too cold of a weld can make the frame weak or fragile

it does too have to do with ferrous or non-ferrous because it needs the iron to corrode/rust

stianless steel: any of various steels alloyed with sufficient "chromium" to resist corrosion, oxidation, or rusting.

walt miller,

what you put down there has everything to do with a metal being ferrous or not!!!!!!!!

a non-ferrous metal won't rust because it has not iron in it.

seeing that it was made in japan, the 400ex frame is made from scrap metals recyled from america. your probably riding around on your grand dad's old truck rims:eek:

it is a mild steel. mig or tig it.

that is right what i put down has nothing to do with ferrous or nonferrous. it has to do with the difinition of stainless steel. all stainless steels will corrode, oxidize, or rust. that is why it is called stainless insted of stainproof. most sainless steel are nonferrous and some are ferrous. look up the difinition it has nothing to do with ferrous
