Motorsports park offers off road fun; opens on Saturday

By DOUG RUSSELL, News Editor
It takes some skill, but mostly it takes a place.

And there are many places that are closed to people who want to ride off-road vehicles, whether dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles or jeeps.

"That's just something a lot of places don't allow anymore," said Jack Lowry, who manages Salt Creek Motor Sports for his wife, Trudy.

Salt Creek is located on private land near Wardville. The Lowrys have opened up more than 250 acres of their ranch land to ATVs, motorcycles, Jeeps and other vehicles designed primarily for off-road travel.

And this weekend, they're having their official grand opening with a scavenger hunt on the property.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," Trudy Lowry said. "This is the only privately-owned motor sports park in the state."

Gates to Salt Creek Motor Sports will open at 9 a.m. Saturday. Riders who want to participate in the scavenger hunt will pay a $20 entry fee and, at 11 a.m., will take off along the trails and into the rugged countryside in search of containers that have cash prizes inside.

There will be at least four five-gallon barrels scattered around the riding area, Lowry said. "You know how an Easter egg hunt is? This will be something like that.

"Of course, the barrels won't be colored like Easter eggs."

Still, she said, riders will have a chance to find at least $400 - $200 in cash and another $200 in gift certificates - when they participate in the scavenger hunt.

People who want to ride their off-road vehicles before or after the scavenger hunt can do so. In fact, Lowry said, "They can ride all day for one price - except for a couple of hours while the scavenger hunt in going on. Only people that enter can ride in that."

"We'll be having gate prizes every time we have a special event," Lowry said. "Kind of like door prizes; we'll be having drawings for everyone who pays to come through the gate."

Another special event planned is a May 14 poker run with $500 in cash and prizes.

Other events planned - or available - include motocross racing, mud bogging, four-wheeled hill climbing and trials events.

There is a $10 charge to enter Salt Creek Motor Sports, but "once they're here, they can stay all day," Lowry said. "They can picnic, ride - just whatever."

To reach Salt Creek Motor Sports from McAlester, drive south on U.S. Highway 69 to Ashland Road. Turn west, or right, on Ashland Road to Ashland.

"When you get to a four-way stop, turn left, or south," Lowry said. "There's about four miles of gravel road and then you can't miss it."

The telephone number is (918) 867-2941.
