I looked in my book at the specs for the 6mm bolts, and they seem high for the bolt size. Can someone tell me the torqe specs for the 6mm bolts on the cylinder head cover?

Just snug them up, that's what I do and never had any troule.

i am assuming the bolts with a 8mm head? these don't have a torque spec as far as i know. they aren't listed in my manual. snug on these is good. go too much and they will break.

Actually, in my Honda Service manual, it lists the torque value for the 8mm head cover bolts as 17 lbs/ft. Please note that this is a MISPRINT! After I was just about to finish up my old 440 kit, I was torquing one of the long bolts down to 17 lbs/ft like it said in the manual........and all of a sudden.....BAM! The bolt snapped right where the threads end, leaving the broken end stuck inside the head. Man, did that aggravate me right as I was about to finish assembly.

This was a misprint, and for all of those whose manual states a torque value for the head cover bolts, the correct torque spec is: 7 lbs/ft . Snugging them on there will do fine and is much closer to 7 lbs/ft than 17 lbs/ft.

read the manual close again. it says 17 ft/lbs for the center 8mm bolt. when they say 8mm, they are NOT referring to the head. they are referring to the threads. i believe this torque spec is correct for this bolt. the smaller bolts with a 8mm HEAD will break off over time if you go that tight.

Thanks for correcting me Cals, I deleted my post as not to put out the wrong information ;) . I don't have my manual here with me, but I remember hearing from an atv site a while back that there was a typo, but I guess they thought the same as I did (confusing bolt head measurement with thread diameter measurement) .

i remember reading that too. maybe the torque for that center bolt is less than the 17ft-lbs (or whatever it was). it appears it is only 8ft-lbs here: http://www.atvriders.com/articles/torque400ex.html

I fell victom to misreading the manual on my first top end rebuild. Snapped a bolt. This year I ran them all up to 8 pounds with no problems.
