reaaaaaaaaaly now.. have you ever seen a quad on the road? doubtful..

I see "street legal" quads on ebay all the time.. sure, they have the tires, the lights, the mirror, horn.. but guess what.. NO state is going to allow that, UNLESS it was granfathered in.. so good luck..

If anyone would like to prove me wrong, id really like to see it.

dirt merchant i think you should stop being a smart *** to be honest. there are counties in michigan that allow you to drive on the road. Not too long ago in dirt wheels there was something about a guy with a 450r that was street legal in AZ. I agree with gas prices being so bad they should have street legal quad like they do in Europe.

Riding quads on the road IS legal here but only on side roads that have no painted lines. The part that I don't understand is,you are allowed to ride them on the shoulders of main roads(roads that have painted lines) but not on the actual road itself except to cross it.In my opinion riding on the shoulder here is more dangerous than the road itself.

04-07-2005, 06:58 PM
ok maybe i should have said, is it FESABLE to do.. or however you spell it, the amount of money that you would spend, you could pickup a ****box car and drive it wherever..

still riding a atv on the street is super dangerous, unless you are absolutly totally rich and had the money for the insane amount of suspension work that would be needed to make it remotly safe on the road..

Here in maryland, you need at least a 12 inch wheel diamiter, and a TON of all kinds of other things to even be legal, and even still, you wouldnt be able to pull it off..

I know two people that died riding fourwheelers on the road. I dont know anyone that died on a streetbike. If you want to ride onroad and off, get a dual sport bike. You would be a lot better of that way.

those guys that died on the road were probably doing it illegaly. Im saying having street quads made would be pretty cool like quads that are made for the road. How sweet would a machine with 4 wheels and a street bike motor be? Did you guys see that thing Ja rule had? it was pretty sweet, it had a katana motor and 3 wheels. pretty nutty

Actually, this could kinda work now that I think about it, Tractors can as long as they have the slow moving triangle on the back of it, Say if they followed the speed limits (if not lower) and stopped at the stop signs and such, it could be listed as farm use couldnt it?

I dont think most places would have a problem with it BUT, you have idiots going wide open down public roads running stop signs and running from cops, soo it kinda ruins your chances, Plus risking your life BIG TIME in the process..

Can I ask a stupid question:
Do quads get a whole lot better gas mileage?
I mean, I assume they do, but what will your typical 400ex or whatever get to the gallon? Tank only hold two or so gallons and it seems like Im always filling it. Of course they are ridden a lot harder than a typical car.
Would it be worth it then?

Butters
04-07-2005, 09:03 PM
well if you didn't rev it out when you shifted it but kinda dogged it a bit and drove economical i would assume its mileage would be comparable to some motorcycles.

I know a guy who rode his 200s three wheeler through the Dairy Queen drive through. He ordered and rode to the window to pay. Nobody said anything at all. That was a looong time ago. Nobody could get away with that around here now.

i think this is an awesome idea...it has my vote! but to ride a quad on pavement it would be smart to have a differential for your wheels though.... man i would love to ride my quad to school and show it off!!!

why? i ride on my road all the time (its private so no one can say anything) and see no need for one... its not like theyre gonna kick out around a turn like a big truck could (if youre driving it where it will have the chance) with a locker/spool...and if it does...and you cant control it...you shouldnt be riding

ive actually talked to someone from the DMV about it that rides and they said theyve looked into it numerous times and have found out that since wheelers have 4 wheels that they would be classified as a "car" and they would have to have a seat belt (now THAT makes sense...)?

Dirt Merchant, why would a wheeler be dangerous with stock supension? if itll rock out in the dirt wide open why wouldnt it ride on a paved highway? the only thing i see needing is street tires?

04-08-2005, 09:27 PM
i ride mine about 6 miles to work and back sometimes. about a mile of it is a highway. Just keep my fingers crossed no cops see me

We live in a town with a population under 10,000. It's pretty common to see people riding their quads on the streets. I've taken mine in town to the store. My husband was stopped by a cop when riding on the street once. The cop was looking for someone, wanted to know if my husband had seen them. Maybe some of you should stop dreaming about freedom to ride in the streets and move out west, lol!

quads are extremely dangerous on roads. their wheelbase is less than seven feet, and they are less than 4 feet wide(stock). try taking a quad aroung a tight corner doing 60:eek: it doesn't work. my brother found that out the hard way by hitting a fence. a quad can't take a turn that fast, but a bike or a car/truck can. quads are so tippy on pavement. the rear end might slide out then grab, and your done for.

just something to think about.

oh ya, that street legal raptor with one rear wheel wouldn't fare too well out on a track or trails:chinese:

A lot more of it has to do with the lower tire air pressures than it does the wheelbase and width. :) With proper street tires and pressure, a lot of that would go away.

The rest of it has to do with suspension geometry and design. Again, not really too much weight should be given to the wheelbase or track.

I have been in Japan since 1993. Me and a friend will be building a CRM250R powered TRX after my Arens frame arrives to replace my '86 frame. The CRM is a street legal 2 stroke motor that is oil injected and uses a computer controlled power valve. Hopefully we will have that quad finished by mid July.

I am hoping the rest of my parts will arrive soon because the weather is BEAUTIFUL now :(

you talkin about Convoy. that would be cool. here if you have a green sticker and your not doin dumb stuff like ridin a wheelie doin 60 the cops are pretty cool about it. we just slow down and ride all the way over on the side and they go by and dont say anything. i rode mine to school one day that was pretty fun. the principal was pretty pi$$ed though, but he just told me not to do it again cuz i didnt have a liscence or anything. quads cant be that dangerous on the road. they stand out better than a bike and more stable. i think its a good idea. quad convoy no all we gotta do is hook up a CB to the quads

If you make your quad street legal in certain counties in Arizona the DMV will actually license it. This topic has been argued before and if you look at an old issue of dirt wheels you'll see a Raptor that was made street legal. Hell in Utah they let you ride them on the streets without doing any modifications. As for it will never happen look at the pics below and see where the future is taking us.
