Round #4 of the GNCC Series was the start of the Youth ATV series. This race was held at the scenic Steele Creek Campground in Morganton NC.

Young racers from all over the country made the trip in hopes of taking home a win and starting thier own march towards a championship!

Cody Hill made the trip from Hedgesville West Virginia. Waiting in the early morning sunshine to be called to the line, Cody was but one of 65 young riders to enter competition!

Racer Productions had a course set up for this race that was fantastic. At nearly 2 1/2 miles, it would have provided an ideal platform for these young riders to prove what they could do! Unfortunatley, severe rains settled in friday evening and the course was shortened.

Track officials scrambled to alter the course, and are shown here giving riders and parents an update prior to the start.

90cc Production was first on the line.

Walker Fowler was out front grabbing the holeshot on his Hetricks powered Kasea!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:19 PM
Cody Hill was 5th out of turn 1.

The 2 stroke quads speed allowed them to get a jump and head for the woods. Battling for position the 1st Youth GNCC was underway!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:20 PM
Clearing the 1st turn, the entire class made it into the woods clean....but they wouldnt stay that way!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:22 PM
Fowler was looking like a Pro when he re-entered the field section.

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:24 PM
The 2 stroke quads took thier toll on Cody Hill. The field sections were the perfect place for them to get an edge and they did! Cody had dropped back to 12th after the first field section, but with the majority of the course in woods, i dont think it concerned him much.

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:26 PM
The biggest question was how muddy would it get!

After one small blast thru a small section of woods, Hill's white quad was turning nasty and fast!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:29 PM
As the classes mixed it up in the woods, the young riders started to all look the same!

Here Brycen Neal pilots his quad thru the sticky mud. Brycen battled to the end and took home 4th in 90 Production!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:31 PM
The North Carolina mud claimed Micheal Spalding and here he recieves some assistance getting his quad unstuck. He finshed 5th in 90 Production

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:34 PM
Delanie McKinney splashes water everywhere after clearing the scoring tent! A 8th place finish would be taken home by this rider in 90 Production!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:35 PM
With the Production class in the woods, everyone turned thier attention to the battles taking place in the field sections!

This rider sends a wall of roost as he clears a corner.

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:39 PM
The grass and mud combined into a slick mess that would prove to be a major obstacle for these young riders. Learning to steer with no traction was the first lesson learned today!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:42 PM
Walker Fowlers quad quit on him after another rider rear ended his quad causing the swing arm and chain to be damaged. Here Walker is shown removing his quad from the course. It is a bad break when these things happen, but I believe this young man has been racing enough to take it in stride.

90 Limited start (11-15)

Joshuah Dains and Micheal Keleman battle for position heading into the 1st turn

Brandon Boso leads the remainder of 90 Limited onto the course.

Pappy
04-03-2005, 05:49 PM
By the start of the second lap, Micheal Keleman was in the lead of 90cc Limited (11-15) and was quickly working his way to the front!

A bottleneck in 90cc Production brought what little lead they had to the full advantage of Keleman and he wasted no time working to the front.

Micheal Mussi was up in the thick of things from the start. A clean ride kept him there! He finished 3rd in his class....AWESOME!

Micheal had a really scary crash at a local race last weekend and appearently fear isnt part of his training program:eek: Go get'm Mike!

After 2 laps, the section prior to the scoring tent became so slick that the riders were fighting just to stay on course and off of each other

Pappy
04-03-2005, 06:39 PM
These young riders fight the conditions just like the adults. I feel like reaching in and pulling the string on them roll offs:D

Pappy
04-03-2005, 06:41 PM
BOTTLENECKS!

Reports back in claimed they were everywhere on the first few laps. A few riders used thier heads and capitalized on this just like the adults.

Pappy
04-03-2005, 06:42 PM
When I tell you that it was slick , I mean it was slick! This rider just couldnt steer as his front tires became mud skates and he climbed the pole:eek:

Pappy
04-03-2005, 06:45 PM
I think this rider has it all under control!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 06:47 PM
Cody Hill works his way thru the scoring area. He had been scored 8th, then 7th and when he came in for this lap he was shown running in 3rd! All I could do was point at my head and told him to ride smart. Then we just sat back and prayed he could hold onto 3rd, we figured that was a great finish for this race!

Pappy
04-03-2005, 06:53 PM
When Cody approached the scoring tent, the official was holding up the "2" to go sign. Once scored he was shown in 1st:eek: After that I literally couldnt hold the camera steady for pictures:p

For the next 2 laps he did what he had to do to maintain his position. He finished the race capturing his first GNCC class win! This was way more then we expected, especially knowing the class was chocked full of talented riders, coupled with the fact he was sick before, during and after the race.

The smile under that helmet cant be bought and I hope that every parent involved with this or any racing series gets to feel the feeling I had even for just once.

Micheal Keleman earned his overall and then some. This rider is well mannered and has some serious skills. Thats two very important things to have in your bag of tricks to make it in life and he is well on his way!

Congratulations from everyone at ATVriders.com!

Congatulations to you and your family Brandon!

Joshua Dains keeps the 2 stroke boys in check and raced hard enough to get 3rd overall! He never quit and his Honda kept pulling and that was what it took in these conditions.

Congratulations Joshua!

Awesome coverage of the race. Although my son broke down with his Hetrick 90 halfway up the hill on the last lap, he still had the time of his life. This is the best idea GNCC has had in a while. This is our future in the making with these kids. After we pushed my sons quad down the hill through the mud, both of us exhausted, he looked up at me and said, "I'm sorry , Dad, I did the best that I could" I think my eyes teared up a little when he said that. I don't think he will ever know how proud of him I was at that moment for just giving the effort that he gave. Isn't that what future champions are made of, just doing their best. All of those kids were champions on Saturday in my eyes, that course would have made some of the adults I ride with nervous. Way to go Kids!!!!! You were all awesome!!!! See you all in SC. A special thanks to Rich Lubinski of Axe Racing for sponsoring my son. Douglas>>

I got a decent start, the 2 strokes were passing me before I got into the woods. In the field it wasnt as bad but once we got in the woods I started trying to make up positions. On the second lap it got really slick and a bottleneck let most of the second row by us. From then on, some laps were fast and some were just bottleneck after bottleneck. There were a few bad ones, but I got around them by picking different lines. From then on I just started passing riders where I could. I saw a polaris with a green sticker so I knew he was in my class, I didnt know if he was the leader or what but I wanted to keep passing and keep going. I passed him before we made it to the top of the big hill and from then on it wasnt bad at all.

When I came into the score area, my dad told me I was in 3rd place. I just got excited and went faster but not too fast. When I came in the woods I saw numerous lines and used them all. When I came around again my dad showed me that I was in 1st. Luckily with 2 to go, I had enough endurance to keep the pace up and use my head.

I feel bad for Walker that his bike broke down. I hope to see him at the Big Buck and maybe I can learn from him also.

Thank You
Cody Hill

i must agree. it was awesome to see all those youth quads on the line. the national anthem, the prayer. the only thing that surprised me was the live engine start, i was disappointed it wasn't dead engine. i think that is a part of xc racing.
caleb's kasea is mostly stock and i was wondering if he had a chance.
but the kid rode his butt off. including flipping it in front of his mom.:eek2: he got back on and finished the race winning the limited 90cc 8-10 yr old class. the top 5 were only seperated by 58 seconds. this class is very competitive.
i was a little teary eye afterwards. he did something i haven't done. yet.
i came close, finishing 2nd in vet. see ya all in s.c:D
