rear shock preload ?

I would like to lower my ride height on the rear of my 400ex. Does the preload ring need to be turned up towards the upper shock mount, or down towards the bottom shock mount? will this affect how it rides at all? i did a few searches but couldnt find exactly what i was looking for.

turn it towards the top.:)

turn the ring AWAY from the shock. ex. if the ring is on the top turn it upwards, and just the opposite if the ring is on the bottom. this will lower your ride height a little but also make your rear suspension a little softer.
