Ok i was looking into buying a 400 ex at the end of summer, i am looking for one $3000 or less, is the acheivable? What should i look for when buying the ex and are there any other problems i should know about the 400 ex? Any other info will be great!

You shouldn't have any problems finding a 400 for around $3000.The 400EX still reigns as the best ATV for trail riding(IMO)Very simple to maintain,ergonomics are excellent,suspension/handling are above average and there is an abundance of after market companies that make upgrades for it.You can't go wrong with the 400.

what kind of gas do i havae to run in the engine, octain, is 87 ok?

yes you can run 87. stock is only 9.1:1 i think.

If it were me I would try to find a built ex with a aftermarket exhaust, cam, big bore, high compression and maybe some upgraded suspension. You can usually find somewhat built ones for not much more than stockers.. Of course you really have to look it over to make sure it's not to beat up. Overall 400EX's are great quads and generally a good value used.
