My 350X was running crappy,so I decided I should see if the valves were to blame. I took off the valve covers, took off the timing plugs, and liked up the "T" mark so it was on the compression stroke. I checked the rockers for play, and this sort of surprized me. The clearence was very large. You could literally stack up three quarters and fit them between the rocker and the valve stem, and there is only supposed to be .003 in. What causes it to get such large clearance? How does it go from .003 to about an 8th of an inch? Where does it all go? Or did I do it wrong?

If you are measuring in the correct place which seems to me that you arent...your cam and rockers are junk if ....

you have to be ABSOLUTELY sure that your on the compression stroke. what i think you did is put it to top dead center on a different stroke then the compression and then when you checked it, it was on the compression stroke which is why it had so much play. this happened to me before. Adjust again making sure you're on the compression stroke

Well how do I know?

you can feel it when you're turning the motor, it's the hardest stroke and you can usually hear the air compressing in the cylinder

hope it works for you

if you were on the wrong stroke the vavles would be to tight, not to loose..

valve clearnce is set on the base circle of the camshaft (lowest point)... now if you have that much play I'd be thinking either the initial ajustment was severly messed up, or you have serious cam / lifter wear problems..

personally I'd be pulling it a part to check before doing anything..

well i have a 250x parts motor, you think i could pull it off that and put the cam in the 350x?

yes i know leo.
so therefor if he checked the clearance on the wrong stroke the first time and then he rotated the motor and by chance ended up on the compression stroke it would be loose.

I'm pretty shure that the 250x cam won't work.

i assume that if it did even work that the 250 cam would cause major power loss to the bigger engine

STUCK VALVE OR WORN CAM AND ROCKERS, YOU SHOULD -NEVER- HAVE THAT MUCH CLEARANCE EVEN ON THE WRONG STROKE. FASTWAY MOTORSPORTS

Well if this helps at all,all four valves had the same clearance before i ajusted them.

did you try what i told you to do?
