I think 18" tires look way better than 20"s on a 400ex. I will race some mx and ride some trails too and sometimes just open sandpits. SO i dont want to loose all my speed on 18inch tires so if i was to get a diff sprocket for the trails and sandpits would that change my speed back to normal?? and then when i go to a mx track i put the original sprocket on for mx??

16/36 gearing should do the trick.

do you mean a 16tooth up front and a 36 in the back or do mean to actually go into the engine??

No, You run a 16 tooth on front and a 36 in the rear.
You can't change the gearing in the motor , its just not gonna happen.

You drop 2 teeth in the back to keep your speed , but still have the handling of 18" tires.

Here is how the sprocket combo's with your 18" tires will affect your top end speed compared to the stock gearing and tires. You can decide for yourself weather you want to lose a little top end speed or not.

16T Front and 36T Rear = 0.38 MPH faster than stock gearing/tires.

16T Front and 37T Rear = 1.05 MPH slower than stock gearing/tires.

16T Front and 38T Rear = 2.83 MPH slower than stock gearing/tires.

If I myself, wanted to get as close to stock as possible I would get the 16T front and 36T rear because it yields a slightly faster top speed but should not have a noticeable decrease in low end torque because the tires more than likely are a little lighter than the stock tires which should compensate for the slightly lower torque this combo will give. All in all it should perform like the stock set-up did before any changes were made to the quad.

Hope this helps you out.

i run 15/36 with stock tires and i love it....i dont think i would feel good with out a case saver with the 16 front....i dont think you will lose much top end but it is my opinion. can you get a smaller back sprocket....like 34???

18 inch tires are not good all around tires,,there for MX racing only,,,you'll rip your rearend off trail riding with 18 tires,,I'd stick with 20's in the rear or buy 18's on rims so you can swap out rear tires for different riding..

thats true... every stump, rock, tree, etc... i see i have to slow down and go around it bc if not BAM and it bends my skid up...
