Help? I need more bottom end power in the sand.I took it to Sand Mountain this weekend, & had to pull the steep hills in 2nd pinned. What would you think?Big bore kit?I am used to my two stroke, but want to build my fourstroke up.It jumps better and is easier to start when my boys crash.I seriously need some help.

That's a 400EX for ya. My girlfriend has never been able to climb in anything but 2nd gear. A smaller front sprocket might let you climb in 3rd gear, but you won't be going any faster.

I would suggest a high compression piston and an aggressive camshaft. It probably wouldn't hurt to go slightly larger on the bore at the same time, like maybe a 416.

I'm curious, did you get harrassed by the Park Rangers this last weekend? I was out at Sand Mountain, camped out front right at the base of the race hill, and they were CONSTANTLY stopping by our camp and citing us for stupid stuff...

2nd gear is the best (pretty much the only) gear to climb in on a 400ex. A 416 kit like Wilkons suggested would be a perfect bore for the dunes. Once the finances work out for me, a 416 is in store. But until then...it's 2nd gear for the hills:ermm:

if you want low end power go with a stroker. at the steep hills in impereal dunes id smoke all 2 strokes and 450s. Im not trying to brag cause long hills they both beat me. But the short steep hills i got tons of power and torque.

If it's stock, you're stuck with it pegged in 2nd gear. After pipe/filter/jetting and a 14 tooth front sprocket I was climbing hills in 3rd gear. Then I put in a high-comp piston and cam...with the 14 tooth sprocket I could climb hills in 3rd and my front tires would be coming up off the ground, so I switched back to the 15 tooth and it's just right in 3rd gear. 2nd gear starts at the bottom of tree shots too.

That sucks wilkin. When I was at Sand Lake, they had a few rangers. I was pouring kerosene on the fire, when i got carried away, and caught the jug on fire. The ranger just laughed. I guess it depends on the time of year you go..

Oh yeah, and about the 2 gear thing. A pipe really helped me. I had a FMF Megamax on there, but it wasn't jetted right, and it would pull some hills in 3rd. One hill had to be 2nd gear, because i had no run at it, and it was damn near straight up. I'm hoping to go back up with my HMF and see how I do against the other 400's.

It is very fast. I have only piped it and changed to K&N's, and twist throttle.Yesterday I rode about 20 miles on it up in the mountains. It's a nice change from the 400.

Man, pipe that 400, put a hot cam and a dyyna fs ignition on it, i can climb huge hils in 4th gear and the front wheels off the ground on mine.

i have the exact same problem at sand mountain.
i was told by someone else to put a stock jet in it for higher elevations, like sand mountain. the elevation there is about 4000 ft.

When I had my 400ex I put a white brothers slip on removed air box lid and rejetted it and it made a big difference. Then i sold it to get the 450r and that thing is a rocket!

what did you rejet it to for sand mountain?

stock is 148 but a friend of told me not to run a stock jet with a pipe and air filter.
i have a DMC pipe and a K&N air cleaner.
the jet i'm running now is 155 and it works great at lower elevations, like below 2500'.

Sand Mountain is 4000' elevation and it has no power at all.
dont want to run it to lean.

I live in PA! With the lid removed and the white brothers slip on I was running a 165 main jet.

It isn't a jetting issue for our 400ex, because I live at 4200 ft elevation.I am going to change the sprocket , and see how it runs Memorial weekend. It is now my 9 year old bike so it will have plenty of power for him. Thanks!

Dont get me wrong they would catch me except the short hills. Banshees, 250r, 450s(both) i would take on the short steep hills. but they would catch me on longer hills. they are definitally faster than me so im not trying to brag. my quad make best power up to tops of 7000rpm. so once the 2strokes really get revving the smoke me.

I have the same problem with my 2005 400EX. I was in Buttercup last weekend and had to take Competition Hill in 2nd. I made it to the top but I was really slow and started bogging down towards the end.

I love riding at Buttercup. The best time to go is Thanksgiving weekend. There are so many people out there. Good times! My husband is from Yuma so we are out there all the time.

Sweet! That is hilarious! I will definitely be out there again this Thanksgiving. We come in a huge group. We have two 40 foot trailers, one white and the other black. We have 2 quads, a blue lifted golf cart, 2 sandrails, and a lift Jeep. We are out there Thursday-Sunday. Last year I dropped my phone in the toilet out there. Ya, you guessed it, I left it there!
