Any aftermarket shock will be better than stock. Also the 01 Raptor shock is a nice upgrade but not as good as aftermarket.
The 400ex arms on a 300ex is a bad idea. Do a search, it has been discussed probally 50 times.

I think that he doesn't know what a good setup is supposed to feel like. There have been several members on here including myself that have tried it and ended up taking it back off due to the horible bump steer it creates.

when i had my 250x i figured i was gonna do it too becuase of the more travel and extended length on a-arms. I had all the stuff accesible and decided to try it. I didnt like the way it sat. so i took it off. I would personally buy a cheap set of 250x/300ex extended a-arms, and works at steelers if your on a budget. I was going to do the raptor shock but iddnt keep the 250 long enough to do so.

BTW, jeff also knows what he is talking about..
