My buddy used 800 grit paper then 1000 then 1200 finished wet sanding with 1500 and then buffed her out with zymoil wax looked good but i wouldn't do it, to much elbow grease and time.

For my white plastic I clean it with a rough material sponge with OXY clean mixed in with the water.

I use 2001 wheel cleaner with a rough cloth on my wifes trailblazer. That stuff seems too work good. Then I shine them up with Son of a Gun

If I where you I wouldnt rub it with anything abrasive. I sanded my 250 and blasters white plastics then everytime it got dirty the dirt got stuck down in the little scratches. I would just try to polish it with some type of chemical. I personaly like mop 'n' glo. You can find it at your supermarket in the floor cleaning isle.
