smoke at start up

i dont no wats wrong maybe my valve seals but its a 2002 i bought it in augest when i start the quad it will smoke, burn oil, for like 2 min but its fine after that i had to temperarally put napa 10w40 in it till i can go get real oil but its makin me worry it never did this b fore i changed the oil but ill change it and pray:rolleyes:

As much as i hate to say this , it sounds like your rings.
When the motor is cold the rings don't seat properly due to some wear on them but once the motor warms up they seat and stop oil from passing.
It happend to my EX but only when it was cold outside , as soon as it got milder it stoped. But when i tore the motor down due to other (non related) problems i replaced them anyways.

Maybe the rings...but it might be a little simpler. You probably over filled the oil when you changed it. Run it a little and then check your oil level. That could be the problem

i put a thicker oil in it yesterday i beleve the prob is solved cause tht other oil was way to thin it was a multiweight oil i got some maxima 4 and it stoped:)

ALOT of 400EXs do that , dont worry too much unless youre getting oil accumulating in your breather reservoir. FASTWAY MOTORSPORTS

When you say breather reservoir,,do you mean the little white thing that goes into the intake tube??? I always wondered what that was there for.

no i dont think i think that white thing is so if you get water in your air box and your filter sucks it up it goes in that thing before it goes in the motor:confused: :huh

mine does it every once and a while only at start up but its very mild....no blue smoke just black = fuel so its alright.... i guess :devil

Yeah that white box is there to acummulate residue. I guess if you were to injest water it might catch some of it but if it were a water trap it would probably be at the bottom of the intake hose to catch the water droplets. In the owners manual it probably says to clean this out once in a while I know on other Hondas its part of our dealer service. WHATEVER YOU DO: dont ride wuth this thing unhooked because the motor will suck dirty air . I know a couple fellows that racehere in JERSEY who unhooked them and put K%N crankase breathers on their quads and didnt plug up the hole but they fixed it before their motos. Theyre lucky because the dust at that WALDEN track would have killed those fresh 425s in short period of time. I knew a gut who tried to plumb a NITROUS NOZZLE in that hole and the 2nd or 3rd time he hit the button he blew the air box off and the fire melted the seat, Hes lucky He didnt burn his balls off. NITROUS needs to be directed after the carb or throttle plate ,He didnt know this and so he probably burned all the hair off his balls. FASTWAY MOTORSPORTS

well if he half arsed a nitorous bottle on it in the first place,,he's probably got balls as big as church bells so he probably burnt alot of hair then...:huh
