Plan Would Give ATV Enthusiasts A Place To Ride

Mar 25, 2005, 7:40 AM
Local leaders in far southeastern Kentucky have developed a plan to turn the roads that wind around steep ridges and mountaintops into an off-road paradise for ATVs.

Now state officials have stepped forward with a $50,000, federally-funded grant to help with the cost of the initiative.

Darrell D. Brock Junior heads the Governor's Office for Local Development. Thursday, he visited Harlan County to announce the grant from the Federal Highway Administration's recreational trails program.

Brock says the hope is that the Harlan County tourism initiative will beef up an ailing coalfield economy.

Already, people from across the nation are coming to Harlan County to ride the rugged trails.

Judge-Executive Joe Grieshop says potential for tourism could help spark an economic revival in the county where unemployment is rampant.

The grant will be used to develop a trailhead and recreational vehicle parking area in Evarts.
