After the windy conditions on Friday forced all the Pro riders to disassemble their pits and pull every back into the trailers, the winds tampered off Saturday Morning, which allowed everyone to safely setup their pit area and prepared for another exciting day of GNCC racing.

By afternoon, their was only a light breeze coming out the west with temps up in the mid 60’s with beautiful blue skies, which was a welcomed site to Sunshine State (Florida) Native, Greg Trew, as he sat outside in the sun relaxing before the Afternoon race hoping for some better luck in Georgia after too disappointing rounds to kick off the season.

In the Opening Round, Greg snapped his Spindle before even completing one lap, which left him with DNF. His bad luck continued in Florida when he became extremely ill with the stomach flu the day of the race and was able to complete a lap once again, so hopefully things turn around for Greg Trew in Georgia.

Chad Duvall was yet another rider looking to get back into the groove after skipping Texas to give his body some more time to adjust to his new medicine that he will need to take for the rest of his life to control his white blood cell count.

After looking great and feeling great in Florida during practice, Chad was forced to drop out of the race in Florida after clipping a tree in the 1st lap, which bent his steering stem.

Once again, Chad was feeling great and looking to get back on the podium once again this year after sharing the podium with Yokley and Balance last year in Georgia.

Bill Ballance was all smiles around the pits as he held his little darling, Lauren. Bill has a true passion for ATV racing and it shows at every race, but Bill is also a devoted Christian and family man and is always quick to thank God and his Family with every visit to the podium.

Shortly after 12PM the Pro Riders and Afternoon races headed over to the starting area to get lined up for 2 hours of intense racing.

After 4 laps of morning racing, the track deteriorated in several sections with deep ruts and mud holes forming as morning riders churned the standing water into the Georgia clay, which would play a big part in the afternoon race.

If a rider wanted a chance to finish near the top this round, they would need endurance to hang on for 5 laps of some rough riding and be very selective in picking their lines because one misplaced tire could easily cost them several minutes or more freeing their quad from the clay, which was especially true for those daring enough to take the shorter alternative line through the silt drainage area in an attempt to save time, which should make for some exciting racing action.

All eyes would be on #3 Chris Borich aboard his Alba Action Honda 450R, after starting out the season with two Overall wins and proving he has the speed to challenge 5 time Champion, Bill Ballance, for the Championship this season.

#9 Brandon Ballance also has started to make his presence known this season after an impressive 2nd Overall finish at the “Orange Crush,” and now Brandon feels even more confident heading into Round #3 after extensively training over the winter, which gave him the endurance he needed to overcome the extremely rough conditions in Florida.

#14 Andy Lagzdins, Duncan Racing/Dirt First, talks with Pro Am rider #25 Brian Schmid before the race, and Andy has plenty to talk about after kicking off the season with an impressive string of Top 10 Overall finishes with and a career best 7th Overall in Texas to be followed up with a 9th Overall in Florida. Last year, Andy never crested the top 10 Overall all season, but was extremely consistent in the top 15 which earned him is #14 National Number, but he is looking to lower it in the single digits this season and at this rate, it seems within his reach.

Congrats Andy on a great start to the season, and now the ball is in your court :D

As the Pros rounded the third turn and headed up an incline with a series of single jumps, Chris Jenks emerged from the dust out front with Jeremy Rice looking to make a pass on Bill to take over the 2nd spot before they head into the woods.

#18 Johnny Gallagher, GT Thunder, looked to have trouble starting his 450R as he was back to last place.

As the riders entered the woods, #9 Brandon Ballance was bumped and flipped over which sent him almost to the back of the pack and would make it extremely difficult to attempt to make a repeat appearance on the podium.

Two miles into the 1st lap, Chris Jenks emeraged from the woods an onto the MX track behind the starting line with several classes still waiting on the line for the start of their race.

A crowd of spectators gathered around the edge of the sediment pond watching to see what line the leaders would take after coming through the finish line. Would they risk heading through the water saturated clay and slit or take the several second detour around the drainage pound.

Jason Weigandt stood in the thick of the muddy pit describing to the Camera what the riders would face if they attempted the challenging short cut, but the roar of the Jenks machine caught his attention as he decided to cut his report short and head to higher ground and watch for himself how the riders would fair through the mud.

Jenks stayed on the gas as he blasted his Maxxis tires across the top of the mud and made it look easy.

Admin
03-24-2005, 09:31 PM
Chris Borich was the next rider to conquer the mud as he too glided across the top with much problem, but with each passing rider the hard crust on top was giving way to some soupy mud below.

Admin
03-24-2005, 09:33 PM
With Borich heading to the far left, Bill Ballance makes a run across the mud on a fresh line on the right to try to make the pass as Thad Josey runs for cover from the mud and water spray off of Bill's Tires as John Ayers captures all the action.

By the beginning of the 2nd lap, Chad Duvall's race day would be over once again after twisting his steering stem yet again as he pulled into the pits :(

Greg Trew wasn't having any better luck either as he headed to the pits to replace one of his steering components as well, which would set him back one lap, but he wasn't about to quit if he could avoid it.

Hang in their guys, it can only get better :D

As Chris Jenks Entered the MX section of the track for the 3rd lap, he remained in the lead with Bill Ballance and Chris Borich in hot pursuit, but Jenks had lost his front brakes after bending a rotor, so it was going to be a challenge to maintain the lead.

Admin
03-27-2005, 12:41 PM
Only several jumps into the MX track, Chris Jenks opted not to launch a huge unforgiven double, which gave Bill the oppurtunity he was looking for as he launched over top of Jenks and took over the lead.

By the 8 mile marker of lap 4, Bill Ballance remained in the lead with Chris Borich chasing after his trail of dust as they pulled away from Chris Jenks in third.

03-27-2005, 07:00 PM
With each passing lap, the ruts became deeper and deeper and more and more riders found themselves stuck. As Bill and Chris approach one of the many mud holes they were forced to quickly find a line through the mud as some riders became so stuck they needed to be pulled out my course workers with Utility machines.

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:02 PM
By the time Jenks came through the section, the stuck YFZ was pulled off the track to free up another line which Chris Jenks utilized as he continued his charge in 3rd place.

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:05 PM
It was almost like Wiliam Yokley was the predator and Jenks was the prey and he could sense the Jenks was injured(No Front Brakes) as he maintained a steady pace behind Jenks and closed the gap in half to almost 30 seconds with one lap to go, so the question was whether Jenks would be able to hold off the quickly approaching Yokley to the finish line.

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:09 PM
To my astonishment, Brandon Ballance came through in 5th place over two minutes behind Yokley, but what happened to everyone else? Brandon Ballance just put his head down on the 4th lap and recorded the fastest lap time in the Pro Class that lap which was enough to pass his way up to 5th :macho

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:11 PM
Matt Smiley came through 6th and once again in front of Houston, but Houston would manage to pass Smiley before the end of the lap and they would come through the scoring tent back to back heading into the final lap.

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:13 PM
Santo Derisi was back to 8th place as he approached me, but he found himself stuck in one of the deep ruts, so with my two cameras around my neck, I ran out onto the track and grabbed ahold of his front bumper and pulled him out of the mud before anyone was able to pass him

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:15 PM
No sooner did I get out the way, Andy Lagzdins with a train of riders behind him came through in 9th place with Bryan Baker in 10th and Greg Trew back to 17th

Early in the 5th lap, Bill Ballance continued to lead the race.

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:24 PM
Chris Borich had slipped 6 seconds behind Ballance heading into the 5th lap, so his team directed him to go through the slit pond short cut at a daring attempt to make the pass on Bill as went around the almost impassable mud pit

Team Alba crew assembled atleast five guys in the pit to prepare for Chris to make his attempt through the slop, and if would get stuck they were ready to grab his Honda and lift it out of the mud, but with a carefully picked line and Chris Borich in control, he easily made it through the mud pit and was almost able to make the pass on Bill Ballance as they headed back into the woods bumper to bumper.

Later in the lap, Chris Borich would go on to pass Bill Ballance they would swap the lead position back in forth several times they worked their way through lapped traffic. With only two miles to go, the report came in the Chris Borich was out front and pulling away from Bill Ballance

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:27 PM
Chris Jenks continued to lose time on the leaders and William Yokley continued to close in on Chris Jenks which would kept the fans in suspense waiting to see how would crest the finish line hill out front.

Reports came in the bridge crossing at the 6 Mile Marker was destroyed and riders were scattering everywhere attempting to cross the creek with its 4 to 8 foot high banks there were practically vertical in sections. Many riders found themselves buried in the mud trying to make their way through the creek, which made things extremely interesting as the Pro riders came through.

Michael Houston and Santo Derisi arrived at the creek in 7th and 8th place and they both attempted to drop down in the creek on each side of the bridge to go across and both of them were sucked up by the creek.

Santo Derisi got off of his machine and went over to assist Michael Houston get his quad out of the mud because Houston was exhausted, so while they worked together to free up Houston’s Honda.

Bryan Baker decided to try to skate his quad across the two remaining poles that the bridge was built on and made it across without slipping one of his tires off the narrow logs as he rode to the otherside. If he would have made one false move, him and his quad would have dropped atleast 4 feet into the creek, so don’t attempt this at home.

Andy Lagzdins approached the creek next and decided he wasn’t going to risk dropping down in the creek or crossing the remaining poles, so he decided to find a spot and try to jump the creek bed. Amazingly, Andy grabbed a handful of throttle and closed his eyes as he launched his Duncan 470R to the other side.

Santo Derisi was able to help Houston get his Honda free and told the exhausted Houston to go on ahead and he would get his Honda out with the help of a friend and some spectators.

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:46 PM
With some help, Santo Derisi was finally able to get his quad free from the muddy creek, but he dropped all the way back to 15th after it took him almost 15 minutes to get free from the creek.

Once he was out of the mud, it was time to carve his way through the dust.

Within a mile of the finish, Chris Borich remained in the lead, but he went to the right through the same mud hole the photos from lap 4 were taken and found him stuck in the same rut that I pulled Santo out the lap before, and luckily for Chris his biggest fan, Dave Bishop, was there to help pull him out of the rut, but it wasn't before Bill Ballance was able to make the pass to take back over the lead.

Admin
03-27-2005, 07:51 PM
Chris Borich did every he could to try to catch Bill before the end of the lap, but their just wasn't enough time, and Bill Ballance went on to win his 1st race of the season.

1.5 minutes later, the final spot for the podium was filled with Chris Jenks taking the checkered flag just 11 seconds ahead of the hard charging William Yokley.

This wasn't Chris Jenks first time on the podium, but it was as a Pro, and he showed everyone that he does have the speed to be a front runner.

Congratulations Chris Jenks on an incredible race:macho

Jeff Brest is probably a face that many riders have become familiar with if they run Tireballs because he is normally found working at the Tireballs stand mounting tires all weekend before the races.

Jeff worked his way up from 11th place to finish out the race in 6th place and moved up to 2nd place in points after Greg Wampler was a no show at Georgia.

Ed Boos was on probably the only Banshee at the event and after only finishing two laps, I think it was obvious why we don't see more Banshee's at GNCC races.

Josh Kirkland didn't make turn, so he decided to climb over the fence. He would only end up completely three laps after working his way up to 12th, and I wonder would he could have done to knock himself out of the race because obviously he doesn't stop for much.

Sport

The Sport class had only two riders:confused:, which was the smallest that I have ever seen the class.

Brad grabbed the holeshot, but Steven Mitchell was able to put his warrior out front by the end of the 1st lap and easily go on to win the race.

Come on all you Sport Class riders
