Looking for recommendations for a starter quad for a 13 year old boy. Has never ridden one. Want reliable, safe for inexperienced rider to begin. Have looked at Sunray 90, but am new to this. Not looking to spend a fortune. Any thoughts appreciated.

may want to look at the honda 250ex. real nice and reliable to. if u want to start with a 90cc bike go with the polaris 90, that is prolly the best 90cc bike out. it has reverse and actually has some suspension. i would keep away from the no name brand bikes. jmo. good luck and teach him responsbly!

a used honda 250ex is a good stater
its not too big or small is just right for most learners.IMO

Thank you, I will check out the Honda. Not too powerful for a kid?

I would say a 250ex. He will learn to shift without a clutch and still have some power. Maybe a 300ex, it all depends on the level of maturity. I put my stepson (5) on a 50 and thats a waste of money they will learn it too soon. I would say a 300ex and rig a way to stop the throtle at a point. You could put a screw in the thumb throtle cover to limit how far he can push it.

Isnt a 90 kind of small for a 13 year old boy? Go with a 250ex they are nice and will last a lifetime. No chain or anything to mess with its shaft driven. Has reverse.. you cant go wrong there and im sure if you'd like you could even limit the throttle.

Get a 300ex. He will get bored of a 250ex in no time. Especially when all of his friends start buying 400's and 450's when they get about 15. I sorta wish I would have bought a 400ex now, because I bought my 300 when I was 13, and it was a very bad time to buy it. I had a faster quad for everyone for a few months and then they all upgraded. Plus I bought mine about a month before the 450's came out. I paid $2500 for a 98 stock 300ex. And its not like I over paid, because thats what they all were going for. Now I am not allowed to get a bigger quad cause dad thinks its a waste of money, and that I would kill myself on a 400. When he told me that I got mad and put a 330 in mine. I'll smoke all my buddies 400ex's and I'm right behind my one friends 416. So a 300ex is a very good quad to start with, because in stock form, they are just plain wimpy. But even just a pipe really wakes them up, and there are tons of upgrades for them. Wow, sorry about the long post guys, i got carried away.

250ex all the way..I started out on one too. IMO they don't get boring fast i still have a lot of fun messing around on mine once in a while. They are reliable too which would be good for his first quad.

Id get him a 300ex, or a Yamaha Blaster. I started on a Blaster when I was 13, but then again I had a lot of prior experience on a 90.

A 250ex wouldnt be a bad choice either, just expect to have to upgrade a little down the road...

I'd agree on a good used 250ex for a starter. I started on one at 23 and still took a while to grow out of it. Heck I still have a great time on it. I tought my G/F's 10y/o to ride on it and he handles it very well. Not to big, not to small. :D

being 13, within a year or two he will at least want a 400ex, I would start out with the 300ex, They have reverse, only around 17-18 Hp, and they are a BULLET PROF motor. They can take almost any amount of abuse dished out to them, and they area very forgiving quad.

Also depending on the money u might be able to pick up a 250x cheaper! (pretty much the same quad)

Being 12 he should learn early i learned to ride a xl75, when i couldnt even start the thing myself. But u do need to teach him that he needs to respect the machine he is on. That machine could hurt anyone if not respected.

300ex are the way to go, Let them learn to use the clutch and everything!

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET A 90. He will outgrow it real fast. I'd say a 300ex because it has great power and he can learn to use the clutch.

I would go with the 300ex, I started out on my 300ex when i was 10 and I am still on it. Ive had to only do two rebuilds on it in 4 years, once because it hadnt ever had a top end in it 7 years, and another to turn the piston the right way (my fault) and install some performance parts. Good kuck with the buy!

I still have the 7 year old top end out of my 300. It is actually in perfect shape. The rings hardly had any wear on them. lil300exkid, can you post a pic of your 300? I have always wondered what it looks like, I am under the impression that it would be really nice looking. I will try to get some pics of mine when I get it back together with the 20 inch tires, new axle, sparks pipe, and cut fenders.

now we dont wanna kill the kid !! lol id dtart him on a blaster you can limit how much they push the throttle yamaha has a screw there so thebeginners can't push it too far i started out on one and loved it it'll teach him how to use a clutch, shift, and get in and out of power but id get a newer one cuz the older ones get more of a beating my friend has one its a 2001 looks like new and opnly has a fmf pipe and some rear tires hes asking about 2000 but would take 1800 it has papers and all i put on all the parts for him its a VERY clean bike pm me about it if your interested;)

03-24-2005, 01:04 PM
300ex is the way to go....i have a 300 an im 13...so yea get a 300

Tommy 17
03-24-2005, 01:09 PM
300ex and blasters are clutches so i'd stay away from them if it was me... if hes never rode before that is a lil much to learn at once...

i'd go with a 250ex or a z250 or even the new phenoix from polaris... what ever one u get the best deal on or the best service would be my choice of the 2... they are almost identical anways in performance...

don't get the kid a 90! he'll be kissing his knees because they are so small...

i was 12 or 13 on a 400ex and i did fine but i also had years of experience on bikes before i got the quad... if u keep and eye on him and he uses his head he will be fine!

my friend who is 14 had never even known that quads existed he thought they were things people mad like go carts he jumped on my old blaster and i expolained what to do and within about 20 minutes he was riding around no problem i wouldnt let him go over 1/4 throttle in 3rd gear thou just get him something with a clutch he'll be thanking you that you did later on when hes one o the kids on a manual and his friends are on 250ex's:cool:

The first bike I rode was manual, 1980 kawasaki mx100 "belonged to my friend" when I was late "12" years old. When I was "13" my parents bought me a TTR-225 which I learned how to operate and ride within a day. This bike wasn't very forgiving being around 300lbs with gas. After the use of the TTR-225 which still sits in my garage, I bought my self a 400ex "14" since quads seemed to be more forgiving. I love the quad and still do! The only mistake I made was putting to much money into modifications. I'm "15" now and currently own a trx450r which I race. If your son seems to learn and pick up information fast, I'de reccomend a 300ex."250ex's get boring too fast" Then when your son gets older and his skill level advances he can move to another quad which suits his needs.

I started off riding my brothers beartracker 250. The first quad of my own was the Yamaha Warrior. I loved that thing. If I had to do it over again though, I'd go with a 300ex first. :macho

So thats my vote..300ex

06-09-2005, 01:45 PM
depends how big he is
i mean im only 14 ,and im gonna be starting off on a trx 450r or ill have to see what 06 brings around.
but see ive got a whole different story im going on for six foot and about 220 pounds.
But in my opinion i ll get something that he will have fun on for about 3-4 years cus not alot of people are in the position to buy a brand new quad every year.
250ex is a great quad but think about it, in 2 /1.5 years he will be 15 and he will deffinatly want a faster quad(if he likes the sport)probably a 450.
my friend that lives around the corner from me is about 135 pounds and 5'5 tall and i see him riding his honda 90 more than his 250 ex,im not saying go out and buy a 90 for him.

so all in all ill probably go with a 400ex about 2500-3500 used
or a raptor/warrior 350
i always thaught that the z/kfx are to big for 400's but theyre got more power than the honda,if hes a little on the bigger Height and wheit side ill go for the 400ex and just teach him slowly

honestly , ive never liked 2 strokes (got alot more power with alot more maintenence)

id go with the 400ex unless you have money to go out and buy him a new quad in about a 1 1/2 years

Just my opinion
:macho :macho :macho

my 13 year old son took his first ride on my 400ex today. He's been riding an xr100 and a ttr-125 for the last couple of years so I decided that he should be able to take the ex for a spin. I told him to go easy because its got a lot more nuts than he is used to. He did fine and next spring I may be shopping for one for him.

My only concern at this point is that i KNOW he rides differently around me than he does when he is out with his friends who all have faster machines. One 13yr neighbor does have a YFZ450, another has a Husqvarna 250 bike and the 14yr girl they hang out with has a banshee.

go with the 250EX. electric start (which i miss sometimes), reverse....... thats what i had before my 250R and i loved it. i got it when i was about 13 or so. they're very reliable and low maintenence. he should be able to handle it.

my vote would be for a blaster, you can find them dirt cheap and they arent a bad quad from factory and he could learn on it pretty quickly, and perf. parts for them are everywhere and also dirt cheap so when he does start to get bored on it you can pipe it and get a 240 kit and trust me those blasters will SCOOT with a 240 kit

how about a 250r with an streetbike motor? :D ok, thats is just what i want! are you looking for a new quad or does it matter? i say anything from an 250 to an 400 will be okay, just limit how fast it will go. the way i figure it, get something a little bit big for your kid that way your kid will grow into it

if you think he can learn to drive a clutch pretty easy then id get him a 300ex or a blaster.

I rode 400exs when i was 13 and am 14 right now and selling my cr85 for one.But if he is a beginer get him a 250ex. I also had a rm80 when i was 10 or 11.

07-07-2005, 03:58 PM
get a 300ex its not too fast for a learner quad but when your ready for it just slip on a pipe and airfilter and it will really wake up

i would bring him to a bike shop and check out each bike and see what HE likes. if he likes a clutch then think about the 300ex if he doesnt then look at the 250 sport bikes, suzuki and honda both have good 250 starter bikes with shaft driven electric start motors. if he has a natural talent i would lean toward the 300ex....it will give him room to improve and grow into.
