My weekend was cut short. When I turned onto I75 north I noticed my oil pressure dropped down to 20 and my truck took a serious loss in power. I exited off in linwood and shut it off, coasted into the mobil station. I think the main brgs went out of my motor. It had a knock when I restarted it for a sec. It was bound up so hard that the started had a hard time turning it over. My granpa and I loaded it up and pulled it home with one of deen arbors power stroke diesels. When I backed it off of the hauler It had 45lbs of pressure and no knock. I got everyone else picked up and hauled up north. But I came back with my truck now.

It has about 140,000 miles on it now, changed the oil every 3000 and never pulled anything heavier then 4 quads. I don't know why this happened but it did. All the fluid levels are perfect, and the oil is full and clean. Jasper has the best warranty 75,000 miles but are the most expensive next to a new GM motor. Its a 96 silverado 4x4 with the 5.7 vortec. I could get an 02 ford power stroke with everything except leather for 17800 with 55,000 miles through my grandpa. Was thinking of putting a new motor in this, driving it for maybe a year and selling it to my dad for 7 grand.

I heard you should have bought a ford about 15 times that day. What a bad way to end my snowmobile season.:ermm:

Anyone on here use a power stroke as a daily driver? Was wondering before I make the decision to buy one. The motor is out of the old chevy right now.

You ought to be able to find a decently low mile vortec 5.7 from a pickup or suv at a more reputable salvage yard without paying too much money. They sometimes even have a warranty on them. That's actually a pretty low mileage for a 5.7 to blow. My uncle is driving my Dad's old 1996 silverado 5.7 with about 270K on it, and the valve covers have never even been off.

I think '02 is the first "safe" year for the powerstroke auto trans. My friend and many others have had lots of trouble with powerstrokes with the auto trans. from 2001 or older.

I'd say you should have bought a ford..
But you would have the same problem 100,000 miles ago.

I have a 2000 F-250 PSD with 152,000 and some change and i drive it everyday and as far as i know nothing has been done to it. You can't go with the PSD and that price sounds pretty good.

Do you mean you can't go wrong with it:confused:

This one is extended cab, with an 8ft box, power everything,cd,4wd all the bells and wistles.

The chevy is getting a factory rebuilt motor, with a 3 yr unlimited mile warranty. And I'm adding an extra tranny cooler, different intake gasket(the factory one is plastic junk). Might have the computer reprogrammed for better miledge.

I think what did the motor in is a couple of blown intake gaskets (but that was caught right away) Anti freeze got down into the lower end and chewed it up.:ermm:

That vortec shouldnt go down like that, my aunt hase one with around 220,000 on it and it will still spin the hell out of the tires and get to a hundred quick. For the powerstrokes, they pull dman good. My boss owns a reposession business and a wrecker service, all he uses are powerstrokes....

From the way you described the intermittent problem with oil pressure it sounds like you might have had a clogged screen on your oil pickup tube.

If the anti freeze chewed up the bearing you must not of caught it too fast cause it takes a little while for it to do it. Unless you didn't change the oil after words.

you obviously havn't driven a 7.3 then........ cause they're anything but junk...... There slower than the new ones out but thats the way it goes, you can have the fast truck one year the next year somthing bigger and faster comes out.

So is an 02 a 7.3 or a 6.0?

I check my oil, antifreez ect 2 times a week. I caught it pretty quick, unless it had a really slow leak. Changed the oil right away too.

The truck is in nice shape, and has some extra's on it. Going to keep it for a while, and sell it to my dad cheap. It has a rebuilt(and beefed up) tranny too.

Can't sell it with a toasted motor either. I don't know what possesed GM to use a plastic intake gasket. The 95 and olders have the old school indestructable ones. Chevy's 5.4's aren't all that great, thats why I'll probrably make the switch to ford.

Not sure on the oil pump yet, I'll find out tommorow. I was just figuring it could have been anti freeze that got down in there.

The first intake gasket blew about 2 yr's ago. It had more power, and was better on gas then my brothers newer 5.4 before it blew up.

Late 03 was the first 6.0's. I have an early 03 with the 7.3 and love it. It is a crewcab lariat FX4 short bed, only problem is fuel is $2.25 and I would say I average about 12mpg.

and the 7.3 and 6.0's are great, they aren't junk

powerstrokes make more power and torque than the duramax, thats a fact, just so ya know:blah:

duramax is probably one of the worse diesels on the market.

So why did they go down in size to a 6.0? Whats supposed to be better about the newer motor's?

My truck will be all back together by satarday, yippee I think:confused:
