Im not sure if the part itself is that much money, but I believe your going to have to split the cases to replace it.

65 bucks for the shaft, and tearing it apart to get the old out and new in. http://www.servicehonda.com/hard%20parts/atv/trx400ex%2099-04/transmission.jpg

Yup your screwed Bud i did that yrs ago and had honda do it costed close to $800 and that was back in 86 (On my 86 250R) A friend of mine did it a couple of yrs ago we did it ourself i believe the part was around $100 then we split the case's and took the tranny apart ect......Replaced the gaskets you ll have a couple $$$ into easy if ya do it yourself

This was done to a 250R now if it s a 4 stroke i have no idea

That Is The Countershaft. And How It Happens, Take a Brand New Retainer And Notice How One Side Is Flat, And The Other Is Rounded Off. It Is As Simple As Putting Your Retainer On Backwards To Cause About 200-300 Bucks In Damage And A While On The Sidelines. Keep The Flat Side Out Against The Splines And You Sholudn't Have Problems. The Worst Part About Mine Is My Friend Put It On And I Was The One Riding In The Truck.

to help for future reference put grease on the splines before u put the sproket on it will keep it from wobbling and wearing out....u should do that to all your parts that have splines

its gonna take u awhile to replace cuz spliting the cases cna be a pain but if u know what ur doin it shouldnt take to long.

he's obviously never split cases before. until u can afford to either buy a cheap bottom end, pay to fix it, or try and go at it yourself, if u absolutely MUST ride;) weld it. YES it is not going to last, and YES it is dangerous, but if I wanted to go on 1 ride and had the part on order and had access to a torch honestly, why the hell not?

I dont see a way to put the retaining clip on backwards, considering the bolt holes wouldnt line up with the sprocket...................
