i sprayed some rust stopper on some parts of my a-arms, because honda's powdercoating or whatever the hell that is, is cheap and chips.. and well, with the weather here in louisiana.. it rust in a day..

so i went ahead and painted them black... i cleaned it real good, sprayed the rust stop primer, then i went over with some coats of the krylon fushion, ya know, the one thats supposed to be fully chip resistant in 7 days.

now i wont be doing much riding for a few days because it rained alot and well, id like to keep my riding privlages in the cane fields and a huge piece of land i ride on.. so im not going cut it up..

anyways, when i had my 400ex i just masked off the area of the aarms i wanted painted, and just shot a couple coats of red engine paint, and it held up really well and never chipped.. no cleaning or primer..

so i think this one will be even better

I'll bet that would look pretty sweet on a black 450. I Should try that and polish the top sides of my PRM a-arm plates.

hell since you gave me such a great idea, i tore down the whole front end last night, and my a-arms are now ready for sanding, primer, and then paint. i think that is looks pretty good, so it should turn out alright on mine too. thanks alot.

try out that fusion paint.. may be great

i know a couple hours after i sprayed it, i dropped the wrench on it and it didnt chip

and they do claim the 7th day to be chip resistant

well like i said, i had just engine paint on my 400ex aarms and i didnt prep it nearly as well as i did this one.. and i did alot of woods and trail riding with it and i never had a problem with it chipping

all i can say is take your time and do it right, if it chips, then touch it up.. still looks alot better than stock silver aarms with rusty chip spots

and for the touch up, just get some auto touch up in a tube in gloss black.. problem solved

well i took nat3060's idea and put it to use on mine, because they looked bad before. i have a few more ideas in stock but we will see how this does to tell if it will be worth doing.

i first sanded all the a-arms down with a 220 grit sand paper.

first coat of filler primer, it is a thicker primer to fill in the deep scratches and marks.

after the first coat of the primer was dry i proceeded to sand them down alittle with some 400 grit sand paper. i didn't sand hard like i did at first just enough to even up any rough spots.

now i am applying the second coat of primer, but this an ordinary sandable primer. it is a slightly darker color as you can see.

after that coat dryed i roughed up the finish alittle with the 400 grit, but just enough for it not to be smooth. and sprayed the gloss black engine enamel on. i think they turned out pretty good. you have to watch out for over spray. i had to add one last coat after this pic because i had some over spray, but i fixed that.

what are the items you need to do this? I may run over to my automotive store or home depot and get this stuff tonight.

well i bought some filler primer, regular sandable primer, and whatever color engine enamel or krylon fusion paint you want. then i got a pack of 220 grit sand paper and 400 grit sand paper. that is about it. and of course you will need some tools:D to take the a-arms off first. oh and you may need some alcohol or acetone to clean the a-arms off with before you spray the first coat of primer on them after that you won't need to use any but be sure not to touch the a-arms diretly with your hands because the oil from your hand will get on them and not allow the paint to stick good.
