-bent frame i think is number one priority
-engine runs?
-coondition (rust, bent parts, etc)
-and your opinion of the price

Compression...if it blows up after you get it that is 300 more $$ you will have to pay, Check all the bushings an bearings because that is another place to dump $$ after you get it. other then that make sure it runs good, and everythying is straight. depending on what you want you can get a pretty nice play around R for 2500. I did the same thing you did. I sold my 300 and got a 250r about 4 years ago. Best move I ever made.

There are two main considerations.

1. Is it a 250r?

2. Can you afford it?

If you want one... buy NEW... You will get caught up and go nuts... and at the end you will pay the same...www.servicehonda.com

that service honda isnt a true 250r tho. it is a cr250 engine in a 400ex frame.
the cr250 engine bottom end isnt made to withstand the beating of a quad. only good thing about that motor is it has a powervalve. all old 250r's are old, but u can only replace so many parts, and then its brand new. and it also depends on wha tyle of riding you do. a trail 250r wont be expansive at all, but a XC or MX quad will take a little money.

Im not a big fan or the Service Honda quads, But like they said they use a Cr250r motor, and NON Counter ballanced. Also the geometry of a 250r i think is better than a 400ex!

I agree with wilken if u have the money and its in Descent shape for the price grab it while u can!

ive owned and raced 10 or so 250r's since 86... from all i have owned there is something about the 89 model that seperates it from the previous years, ,i know the 88 and 89 are basically the same but i have always loved the 89,,,, there is not a quad around the will give you what the 250r will, overall its the #1 quad of all time and finding one thats mint is very hard... average 250r's will sale between $2500 and $3500,, modified ones will sale somewhere between $3500 and $6000,, find one thats been totally rebuilt from the ground up and you can save some money..

On any year R look for broken frames especially around the motor mounts and footpeg area. Then look over the engine cases for repairs.
