Does anybody have or know anything about the MSD Box for the 400ex? Sounds pretty cool, adjustable rev limiter and adjustable holeshot control....whatever that is??? May just have to get one to help the throttle response a bit and hold me over till engine mod time.

thanks

Im talking to MSD right now about getting one of the first sets they release to test out!!!! You actually have to get them from www.factorydirectperformance.com they handle the ATV\motorcycle products for MSD. it will be about another month or 2 before their released and it will be $450 retail for it!!!!!

Does anybody know what the Holeshot Control does?

Guys If this is anything like the Fmf ignition was It doesnt work ,
The Fmf was very similar it came with a program that you were supposed to be able to adjust your whole powercure on your computer guess what, didnt work! It also came with a switch probraly similar to the MSD's holeshot control It had 2 settings one for like normal rising or something and one for a sudden burst of power ? Again Didnt work. The FMF costed like 350 or something which amounted to a complete ripoff.
So I dont know what to tell you about the MSD besides wait till someone else gets it or the Magazines get it .
Hope I helped
Kris.

I'm assuming it's like their 2 stage rev limiter for cars. What it does is add a second rev limiter that you can set and use for launching. It would hold your RPM's at the exact predetermined(by you) setting until you let the clutch out. What this does it helps you launch at the same RPM every time for consistency. Once you launch the holeshot control is overridden and the regular high RPM rev limiter takes over. The rev limits are set by changing plug in chips that you buy seperately. You may have a high limit of say 10,000 RPM but a holeshot limit of maybe 3,000 RPM.

Does anybody know if they're going to make one for a 300EX?

Ray is sending me out a proto-type to see how it works on a built motor and to get some feed-back from an engine builder. Good luck getting the magazine article done. It's a lot of work organizing the magazine people to come back here. Sometimes if you take your own pictures, they may run a picture of your machine. ATV Sport would probably be your best bet at getting one done though.

I will let you guys know what they say as soon as i hear from them, if nothing else I can do like Mickey said and send pics and info and see if they will do something with that!! I was looking in the newest ATV sport and there was 2 articles of 400EX's in there. one was a flattrack LRD 460EX and the other was a Duncan\roll 440EX! ive got just as much aftermarket stuff if not more than they do and surely a lot faster motor than both of those!!

I have and MSD ignition on a jet ski that I race in the IJSBA, if MSD makes anything for the 400, it will probably be a success, the MSD on the jet ski has adjustable timing curves, and max retartd adjustments, this will be an excellent ignition for the 400, if it's any thing like the one I have on the ski......hole shot functions are not neccissary when you have a cluth, where you can adjust your own rev limit for launching.

What about the no loss ignitions. I am not sure what that means but I have heard of them on skis. You might know Ricky G. What district do you race in the ijsba? I may be racing soon once i get a bettter ski for racing. Right now I have a 2000 yamaha xl1200 limited. Its a beast and wieghs a ton.

Ricky g
05-13-2002, 06:59 PM
yes MSD Total Loss ignitions are used for closed course racing, basically there are no magnets on the flyweheel, thus freeing up the engine to create more hp,I think the batteries would have to be beefed up on a 400 if MSD comes out with a total loss for it, they are for competiton racing only, I race in region one in the novic superstock 800 runabout class......quads and jet ski have allot of similarities, it's good cross tranining going from one to the other.

I may be wrong but I think the MSD ignitions will come with a MSD battery for the 400! not positive though.

Texan32
05-14-2002, 08:34 AM
Hey chad, i think that is for the ignition enhancers. I thought the battery was for extra juice for those machines that don't have regular 12volt batteries (banshee, 250R,...) Could be wrong though.

THOSE FMF IGN STARTED OUT AT LIKE $350 or so for bikes but didnt work too good and didnt sell you can now buy them for about $95 WE HAVE PUT THEM ON 426s(yz) and 440 exs they can help you find traction if the track is real slick or real greasy but we havent yet seen the new MSD . The 400ex system will run off you stock 12 volt battery. The system will come complete with CDI, Coil, Coil bracket, 8.5 mm spark plug wire, mounting kit and instructions. The ignition will allow you adjust your timing, holeshot control, higher rev-limiter and hotter spark.

do you really ned a hotter spark. With a high comp. engine wouldn't be more likely to everheat? Thanx fr the llink Bro. Hey Chad, if this ignition box lets u change ur timing, r u gonna try to make it so u gets the most hp out of it at High-lifter. I know that what they do in Nascar. Mess w/ the timing forpeak hp.

On the jet ski, I run the MSD ignition enhancer, and not the MSD total loss ignition, the ignition enhancer works off the charging system of the flywheel, the MSD ignition enhancer lets you choose your own timing curves, I run mine at +6 deg timing over stock timing untill 5500 rpm, then the timming gradually returns to 0 deg as the rpm's reach 7200 rpm's, over 7200 rpm's the timing retards 2 deg from stock, the rev limiter is set at 8000 rpm advancing the timing when accellerating free's the engine up and makes it accellerate harder, the ignition will have to be tweaked with, on each individual quad, but once there dialed in right, they are a must for competition racing, glad to see MSD step up to the plate with an ignition for the 400, these 400's are going to be hard to beat, I'm glad I went with my instinct and got a 4 stroke Honda over the Banshee, once these 400 are moded, they bad.

Ray,
Did you get my PM??? I sent you over a message. Just wondering if you recieved my resume and stuff I sent you. I am trying to get my 505 featured in a magazine and as you can see from my resume I can give good publicity for the MSD ignition! I can also do a review of it on here for all these guys to see! Let me know what you think!
Thanks
Zero, If I get the MSD ignition Im sure I will work with it on the dyno at Highlifter to see what it will do!!! I have an MSD ignition on one of my show trucks so I know MSD is some very nice high quality stuff!!

Did you guys ever have a chance to test this MSD ignition, and if so, how well did it work?

What kind of gains - i.e. performance, throttle response, etc. did you pick up?

Is it pretty easy to set up and adjust the ignition timing? Also, do you adjust the rev limit by changing out a module like on MSD's automotive products? How well does it mount? Any problems or concerns with yours? Does the two-stage rev control work well for drag racing?

Where did you end up buying yours from? The cheapest I've found it is $391 from MPS Racing. I believe Billet Bike Works is also a dealer, but I haven't been able to get a hold of anyone there.

Details please!! :D

Thanks,
Jordan

Yes it works good. We picked up a little quicker times but we were running a mild motor like what Chad Duvall ran last year. This year we are going ti 12:1 and alot bigger cam and that's when it will work even better.

You will have to test it and work with it to run with your set up.
