I checked the search and the faq but nothing quite like what I have. On my 2005 rancher ES from time to time, when you go to shift, it will flash the gear its in or turn to straight line across the indicator screen whether it be 2nd, 4th or 3rd theres no ryme or reason. I have to turn it off, turn the switch on and downshift manually with a wrench untill it gets to neutral then it works fine for a while till it does it again. It started out doing this seldomly but now its getting to be an everytime occurence. Anyone ran into this? Any hints or pointers before I go troubleshooting? Thanks in advance.

that happened to me on my 01 ES rancher. It would happen at a certain speed and wouldnt shift at all. I could turn the key off and back on and it would shift. I only had to use the manual shifter a couple of times because of it. I carried it into the dealer and they replaced the angle sensor...that didnt fix it. so I went back and I had to get a new wiring harness. that fixed the problem and its worked fine since then.

That happened to our 04 rancher once. I just turned the key to the off position and then turned it back on and it was fine.

i heard if your battery is old or low then the ES's will have shift problems....try getting a new battery

is the quad out of warranty? If not just take it in and let them fix it.

Make sure your clutch is adjusted to specs, that can cause problems. PS does your speedo still work or does it go to 0?
