on the stock 450r shocks to make the preload the softest would the screw be turned the whole way in or the whole way out?

preload is the spring there is no screw you just run the collar at the top of the spring up to soften it

ok then, what is the compression and rebound setting for on the stock shocks and which screw is which on the shocks(top/bottom)?

The compression is on the top and the rebound is on the bottom. Turning the compression in (clockwise) will stiffin it up, the same goes with the rebound. The two settings work together in some situations. The only good way to dial in your suspension is to start in the middle and start making little adjustments. It is a good thing to have a track that has whoops, doubles, breaking bumps and everything you would see in a normal race condition or trail condition depending on where you ride. Experimenting is the only good way to dial in your suspension.
