I was on C&Ds site looking at bore kits for a 300ex. The site recommended that I install a high-comp piston with a cam. Does it apply the other way around too? If I just kit the 11:1 kit, do I need to order a cam as well, or can I wait until I have the money?

You could wait. It is just that they kind of go hand in hand. Somewhat like installing a filter with an exhaust. You could do one at a time, but it would benefit more from both.

Also take into consideration the labor you will save. It will be cheaper to just drop in a new cam while they have the rest of the top end apart. There is a bit more labor involved in tearing it back down to the point to drop the cam in after the fact.

Also, they warned that a 300ex starter may not be able to turn the motor with an 11:1 piston. Is that really going to be a problem? If so, what do I need to replace it with to ensure it isn't a problem.

Oh, no, I'm doing it all myself. So labor isn't an issue. I am assuming that a 300ex is slightly easier to operate on than a 454 Chevy (out of a UL Hydroplane...).

the 300 will turn over a 11 to 1 piston no problem,i just installed one in mine.i am happy with just the piston and a exhaust system and i rejetted the carb.i dont want a cam right now because i'll lose the low end torque, thats what makes the 300ex what it is,itsnot much of a rever stock

Just save your money and do a 330 kit. Mine revs high, fast, and has tons of low end, mid range, and top end. I was extremely happy with the results. It gives my starter a hard time, but it turns it over, so i don't worry about it. Plus they are reliable.

Next question:

Do these 330 kits change bore and stroke? Do they actually increase your displacement to 330cc or something close?

They just change the bore, not the stroke. And It actually does bump you cc's up to 330.

I don't think having a 454 in an airplane would allow it to qualify as an Ultralight;) :D .

Got any pics of it? (My dad is a huge airplane fanatic and I'm sure he'd love to see that Hyrdoplane) If you have any, you can send pics to my e-mail: ntadej@hotmail.com

Thanks....sorry to take over some of the thread.

Oh okay, I thought you were referring to an amphibious UL. I was wondering how you would consider an airplane with a 454ci engine an UL...
