This article is from Popular Mechanics:
"Who says you can't teach an old engine a new trick? Ogden, Utah, inventor Frank Keoppel has found a way to run a 2-stroke engine on straight gas, without fuel injection.

Keoppel's innovation adds an isolation chamber, which is separated from the crankcase by a flexible membrane that is impermeable to oil and water. The membrane is shown here in red.

When the piston moves up, the membrane compensates for the vacuum that would normally be created in the crankcase, by flexing inward. This draws air and fuel into a holding chamber. At the same time, oil is drawn upward along the cylinder wall.

When the piston moves down during the power stroke, the membrane moves out, forcing fuel into the engine. A second ring at the bottom of the piston helps contain the oil.

Keoppel says his engine will be cheaper to operate than a conventional 2-stroke engine. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office says its real advantage is environmental. Keeping the oil in the crankcase means less unburned hydrocarbons will escape into the atmosphere.

Bombardier has bought and developed this technology for use on an upcoming and soon to be released 2 stroke racing ATV. Hold on folks, the balance of 2 vs 4 stroke dominance is again about to change."
