I finally got my Maier 250R hood today, decided to go ahead and tack it on for now. I'm gonna end up doing some more trimming on the fender and hood, reposition it and transfer my number plate. But I like the way it looks so far. Lemme know what you think.

I actually thought it was a 400ex at first glance.. :)

hey, that is by far the best looking 300ex ive ever seen. i had a 97 300ex with stock plastic(cut fenders) but your looks sweet send in some more pics after you get it bolted up.

300ex73
03-16-2005, 05:45 AM
This is the only pic i could get to work right now, I'll try to get some more on here later. No the hood didn't come with a grill, but I have some leftover plastic and I'm going to make a grill for it. If it works, I'll prolly put a few of them up for sale. I'll make sure to let you know how it goes.

As for trimming the fenders more. I'm only going to trim the front corners to make it all flow together better, not shorten the overall width of the fenders.

I'll prolly get a few more pics when I get it all done, and get the quad washed.

300ex73

Here's a pic a pic of it from the front. You can see pretty much why I want to trim them a little more to make it all flow together better. Like I said, I'm not going to mae the width any narrower, just going to trim the corners right by the hood.

Thanks man. I was kina skepitcal at first, but I kinda like it now. Definitely adds something to the front end. Now I just need to get the trimming done, and get my number plate transferred.

Doesn't look as good as if you did it on stock plastic...doesn't flow as good...My opnion would be to trim that plastic behind it..and make the sides from the tank flow down into the hood...And find a way to move it up some so its not hanging off the front plastic...looks ok though man. here..This might help you out a little...see how my tank plastic flows..yours is different..but I can see that you could do it..I'll photoshop a pic for you.

03-18-2005, 07:20 AM
Actually, the front plastic is the Maier full fender. I had the one piece, but didn't like it as well. So I bought the full fenders, and sliced 'em. I like the way it slightly flares up. I been thinking about maybe heating them up a little and bringing them up a bit more also. But anyways. Yeah, I didn't like the fit of the one piece, so I made my own race cut. It looks pretty good up close, especially when it's clean. As for trimming the hoods and putting them on for people, I would consider it. I mean, cutting the hood is pretty simple. I just sliced off the 2 mounting tabs that are near the cutout for the controls, then smoothed them out. But if anyone is really interested in having me put one on for them, then just send me a PM. Also, like I said before, I'll be making some grills out of the white plastic that was left over from doing my race cuts. I could also make them in other colors if the plastic was provided for doing such. Hell, I'd prolly even include the hardware and some instructions for putting it on. But like I said, PM with any questions.

Hah...Nobody ever asked me to do theirs..and I did it first...hah..Good job man.

hey 300ex73,

If you could post some pics of the finished product that would be great. I am really debating doing it to mine. I have black maier race cuts and everything else is red or chrome, what color hood do you think i should go with??

Well, for the color, there's only like 7 choices. Of them, I think the silver would prolly look best, maybe red. If you want though, they have a faux carbon print type hood as well. But, with the amount of red and yellow you have, with very little silver or chrome, I'd prolly say the silver hood. However, for a little stealthier look, you could just use black. It's more or less just a matter of personal preference.

And yeah, I'll make sure to get some more pics as soon as I can get it all trimmed, get the grill made, and transfer the number plate.

I'm pretty sure they don't have one for the 400EX. But you could prolly pretty easily do a 250R hood on it.

Well, I finished getting everything trimmed up and have the number plate transferred. Also have my grill made and ready to snap in. But, it may be a few more days before I can get any pics. Idk, maybe I can get it close enough to shoot it with the webcam. Anyways, I should have some new pics by the end of the week.

So you just bolted it on top of the existin plastic? Then just trimmed the top and bottom so it would flow better?? I think i might cut the inside plastic out a little and put some wire mesh in the hole on the scoop to dress it up a little. Looks sweet!! Nice job! Ill post some pics of mine when i get it done.

ltl666devil
04-01-2005, 10:37 PM
how did you get it to mold around the exsisting fender. im trying to do mine and on the sides theres a 1/4 gap between the hood and my fenders. also how much did you cut off the top of the hood.

300ex73
04-02-2005, 06:19 AM
If you've got a heat gun, the can heat it up a little and bend it a little. I wasn't too worried about the gap on mine. with the way i cut the fenders, there's only about an 1/8" gap, so it's pretty close. Basically what I did to get it close, was to trim the nose slightly, so that the contour of the 300 plastic didn't interfere with the contour of the 250 hood. Thus, not causing as much lifting of the hood. And as for how much I trimmed off the top of the 250R hood. I made an angled cut (which you can see from the pic) within about an inch of the original mounting hole.

I also have a grill made for it, but I haven't been able to get it installed yet. Need to make a trip to the hardware store.

so if your using stock plastic, will it mount right up, or will you have to fab stuff to make it work? Do you just take of the stock hood in the middle, or what?

300ex73
04-03-2005, 07:29 AM
I'm not sure what it would take to mount it up to stock plastics. I'd recommend talking to pvt.maggot on that one. I'm pretty sure it would work better if you take out the original hood. Might have to do some trimming too. But, like I said, try sending pvt.maggot a pm.

The pic is pretty bad, but at least you can sort of see it. What do you guys think?

I took out the original hood, and had to trim it up a bit. It still needs heated up and molded a little, but its not too bad.

I eventually plan on getting some kind of better suspension, not sure what yet though. I'm waiting until I can get my Z400 sold, then I'll prolly look into a 450R, and spend a little money and get some better suspension for the 300.

And yes, they're Works shocks. I wish I had gone with Elkas, but these work alright. I got them because I was riding one day and snapped one of my fronts. They only cost me about $350, which was good enough for me at the time.

sorry for bringing a dead topic back up, but what did you guys do when you put on your hoods and the little black headlight mount on the steering stem shows? Also, are maier 300ex front plastics all one piece, and replace the stock front fenders, tank cover and hood? Thanks

300ex73
07-25-2005, 08:43 AM
Dunno what to tell you about the steering stem. As far as getting it to fit, there's a couple of tabs at the top you'll need to cut off. It's also a good idea to heat it up some and bend it to fit. I trimmed a lot off of the front fenders to get it to look the way I wanted. Basically, it's just one of those things that you buy, and make it fit.

As for the Maier fronts. The race cut is all one piece, but imo they don't fit as good as the stock type. The stock type requires a tank cover. I prefer it this way, as you can add a little more style to the quad by using a 250R hood, and a 300 tank cover that are color matched.
