I may be wrong, but I heard somewhere that you could use a timing chain from a 450 in a 400 motor and it was like putting a heavier chain in the 400. I was wondering if anyone had heard of it and if it was right or wrong?

You should be able to do a search and find a lot of info on this.

I put it in the 440 400ex that I put together for a friend, and it has worked great. Was back into the motor afterwards to replace a head gasket and it showed no unusual signs of wear. The 450 chain had twice the amount of material in it compared to the 400ex chain. If I remember right it was like 25 bucks too!

Some even told me many of the $100 "heavy duty" chains bought from engine builders was the 450 bike motor chain.:eek2:

yes it work great Y have one in mine. and yes it's the one off the CRF. it's cheaper then a stock 400ex chain so you would be stuîd to not do it.

Ordered one for 426ex from servicehonda last week, they called and said it was backordered. And no word from honda on shipping date. Guess that gives me time to polish up the wheels and nurf bars!

What year cam chain for the crf 450 are you using? My buddy said he ordered one an it didn't fit. I just bought a HD cam chain for mine and paid $90 for it.

I believe I ordered like a o2 model chain, it was only about 25 bucks and it is supposed to be the same as the hd chain.

They told me they were backordered also, but I called back to cancel and they said they were off backorder and would maybe ship out this week.

My buddy said it was to loose and the tensioner was all the way out. Are you doing anything different? I was going to use the crf 450 cam chain if it worked in his. thats way i went ahead and spent $90 for the one from Pro Fab. And people tell that it might be a crf450 cam chain anyways. Thats 3x what I could have paid for a crf cam chain. That pizz's me off. Could have spent that money on something else (like beer). I don't know about everyone else but I work hard for my money (not really) so I can play hard. So I like to get the most for my money.

that chain fits. if there is too much slack, make sure the chain is on both sprockets. if it is, maybe you ordered the wrong chain. you can find the part number in the frequently asked question forum on this website.
