the easy way to do it is to use the stock spark plug tool. you can get the tool onto the plug with out removing anything. not too difficult just takes some practice.

sit down next to the quad. remove boot. put the oem sparkplug tool over the plug. take the oem allenwrench, stick it through the end of the sparkplug tool, break loose. remove allenwrench. keep turning by hand until you can feel it's out of the hole. very simple.

Most sockets wont fit...has to be a really thin wall for it to work.

I lost my original spark plug socket and found out that if you grind down the wall of a 18mm craftsman socket you can get to the plug rockey mountaian sells a socket just for the 400ex but i had to grind that one also so just get a cheep 18mm deep socket and grind it

turn the gas off and stand it up on the rear. you can use a standard spark plug socket sold at any tool store.

A 18mm Craftsman works perfect for me, slides right on. I wonder if some 400ex heads are cast different:confused:

Thats a good question. I have never heard of any one having any problems with changing the plug. I have a couple of buddies riding 400's also so I will call them and see what they use but I use just a regular spark plug socket, the same one I use to change the plugs in my truck.

On my '02 only the factory socket will fit. Even that doesn't seem to be a great fit.
